IN SEARCH OF BERLIN’S GREEN CHRISTMAS MARKETS

We are 100% convinced: Santa loves going green! Isn’t Christmas after all a time to be humble and grateful and loving? So why does everyone stress so much about rushing out and buying as many useless, trashy items as possible? And the enormous lines on the return counter when everything is over… what a crazy world.

Thank god, the vibe in Berlin is a bit different - at least within our thriving Berlin Green Scene. Lots of independent stores, artist collectives and event organizers came up with their own ideas of how to make our Christmas shopping way more pleasant and filled with purpose.

Likewise, when it comes to unconventional Christmas events, this city definitely knows how to keep us in awe. You’ll find everything from bohemian nostalgia to unicorn wonderlands, redefining the usual X-Mas frenzy.

Reused spaces like park decks or former waste lands along the Spree are putting up glitter and candle lights, local creatives set up shop at quaint gothic church squares, transformed cold storage warehouses are heated up with love and mulled wine and the oldest corners of Berlin show us how to go all green and natural…

Did you actually know that there are more than 70 Christmas markets in Berlin? To help you navigate your way to those that are less about mass consumption and more about supporting your locals, we put together our take on the best Berlin Christmas markets 2019: The Green Edition !

TIP: If the whole Christmas market buzz isn't your thing, check out our article with 6+ Sustainable Christmas Gifts . Most of them can be ordered online - and help you to escape the crazy Christmas frenzy while sharing love and excitement about a more conscious future with your loved ones.

But now, back to Berlin's Christmas Markets - here is our take on....

THE BEST ALTERNATIVE BERLIN CHRISTMAS MARKETS 2021

1. HEISSA HOLZMARKT

One of our favorite utopian wonderlands, Holzmarkt, is hosting a fun-, love- and food-filled winter market. They promise to make our eyes sparkle, and we have no doubt on that. Swing by for a day out with the fam, for warming up your clubbing night or just for hanging out. The program has something in store for unicorns of all ages: From ice curling, listening to fairy tales, baking Christmas cookies, watching movies, jumping with the acrobats, dancing to live music, finding the coolest gifts, indulging in delicious treats and homemade Glühwein... Far from anything conventional - let’s get snug and merry, right by the river Spree.

2. MERRY MARKTHALLE

If you don’t want to stand outside freezing but still enjoy a really unique Christmas market, head over to Kreuzberg’s Markthalle Neun as they turn their farmers market into a beautiful X-mas celebration each weekend throughout the Advent season. Not only can you stock up on fresh, organic fare for your Christmas feast directly from the friendly Brandenburg farmers. You can also roam the stands of some lovely young creators & small manufactures, all offering delightful gifts and handcrafted goods that last. And if that’s not reason enough, the Markthalle has prepared some other merry activities like neighborhood choirs, an advent calendar, a Christmas bakery for kids, a DIY packing station. Short: a warm & cozy wonderland. No plastic products, but natural goodness. Not to forget the delicious mulled wine. New this year: hire a Christmas tree!

3. ECO CHRISTMAS MARKET SOPHIENSTRAßE

One of the oldest streets in Berlin comes to live over Christmas, enchanting our hearts with a homely, nostalgic atmosphere. If you thought “going green” is a new trend here, Berlin’s original eco friendly Christmas market is happening for the 23rd time this year! Just a short stroll from Hackesche Höfe, this quaint side street lets you escape the usual Christmas craze, while marveling at the amazing array of sustainable goods that local designers and artists came up with. This market boasts the perfect mix of anything eco: from trendy crafts made by young Berlin creatives, over the more classic natural “Bio” products to marvelous ethnic fair trade items - it’s a secret tip for everyone on the search for something different.

4. WEIHNACHTSRODEO

Another famous indoor Christmas market, this one doesn’t have anything to do with horses and cowboys. Instead, the X-Mas Rodeo is dedicated to all those whose hearts beat for design, fashion, arts & DIY. Since 10 years, it provides a stage for more than 200 exhibitors, bringing together the coolest street art talents, upcoming designers, skilled graphic artists and innovative street food makers on six floors. All of them trading the most creative, thoughtful and - above all - beautiful goods that make unique and unconventional gifts for your loved ones (or yourself). On top, you’ll be entertained by creative DIY workshops, decent DJ sounds, colorful kids stuff and festive chill out oases. Everything is set at the stunning Kühlhaus Berlin, a huge 3500 qm brick wall building in urban Kreuzberg.

5. ALT-RIXDORF CHRISTMAS MARKET

Imagine yourself in a far away time, stepping through the snow and reaching a fanciful little square in an ancient bohemian village. Stalls lit by the warm light of gas lamps, kids building a snowman, the delicious smell of roasted chestnuts entering your nose… Well, at the quaint cobbled Richardplatz in Neukölln, this dreamy scene becomes pretty much reality. What used to be a village called Rixdorf is hard to beat in terms of setting for a nostalgic Christmas market. Even better: more than 100 charitable organizations and collectives come together to sell crafted treasures made from wood, wax or other raw materials. Rounded off by some local Rixdorf specialties like mulled wine, schnapps or liquors brewed after secret family recipes. Add pony rides and a blacksmith exhibition and you forget that you’re in one of the trendiest urban cities in Europe.

Holy moly, Berlin is on fire, with summer finally filling us up with all that warmth and Vitamin D that we have been craving throughout this crazy lockdown winter. While you probably don’t have time to flee the city for a refreshing dip into a lake every day, we have a pretty good alternative to cool you down: Delicious vegan ice cream!

With the sun shining and everyone outside and in a good mood, we love everything about this long ice cream season. For you we got into the queues of Berlin’s inventive ice cream parlours to try and test especially their plant based varieties - quite a challenge considering all the new openings this season 🙂 Our food enthusiast Miri went out to taste her way through the vast choice, from fruity sorbets to creamy nut-based scoops. To make your decision easier, she wrote up this tempting top 5 guide.

Enjoy ice “green”, help save the world!

We already wrote about all the benefits that come with the cool vegan lifestyle in our huge Vegan Brunch Guide . Believe us, Berlin is the perfect place to give this vegan thing a try! Here, no one has to sacrifice, there are plenty of options for plant-based refreshments. Many ice cream makers make a change and include more fruit sorbets and soy-, almond-, rice- or coconut-based ice cream to their selection. But now, we won't let you wait any longer...

WHO'S MAKING THE BEST VEGAN ICE CREAM IN BERLIN?

We still have a few places on our must-try list, Green Scoop Vegan being right on top (let us know if you went already). But for now, here is our verdict for the top 5 vegan ice cream spots in town:

Balaram (Friedrichshain)

Balaram Ice Cream | GreenMe Berlin

©Balaram Ice Cream

Check out the first ALL vegan ice cream shop of Berlin in the heart of Friedrichshain, right at the lively Boxhagener Platz - yes, even the waffles, toppings and whipped cream are vegan at Balaram!

Since 2016, Ferdinand and his friendly team offer specialities of the local vegan ice producer Eiskontor Berlin. With 18 regularly changing creative flavours like New York Cheesecake or Peanut Butter, the only downside here is that you have to make a choice: We recommend to try out a larger variety of flavours by opting for kid’s scoops and definitely pimp your choice in the „free-topping-area“ with sauces and crumbles. Beautiful colourful, creamy, delicious!

Check out Balaram on the GreenMe Map >

Balaram | 100% vegan ice cream shop with lots of different varieties | Opening Hours: Mon-Thu 12 - 9.30pm, Fri-Sun 12 - 10.30pm | Gabriel-Max-Str. 17, 10245 Berlin - Friedrichshain

Tribeca Ice Cream | GreenMe Berlin

Nestled in the picturesque Kollwitzkiez, not far from the famous Mauerpark in Prenzlauer Berg, there is another ALL vegan ice cream shop in Rykestraße that we absolutely love! Here, everything is made right in house. Inspired and back from New York, Frank and Klaus of Tribeca Ice Cream created a concept and a product that is good for your health and the planet: Only organic products are used, their entire range of ice cream is based on rice milk and coconut oil and all their homemade creations are without refined sugar and and free of soy or gluten!

The (n)ice guys proof that plant-based ice is so much more than fruit sorbet and offer some seriously innovative fillings for your Tribeca cones, bowls and sandwiches. You might want to stop here multiple times this summer to sample all their exciting and interesting flavours from raw-chocolate and maca-salty-caramel to banana-walnut ice cream! Our secret favorite is pistaccio-luccuma.

This place is a gem and we’re very curious about their plans for the future. The creamy tribeca vegan ice cream is also available in delicatessen shops or at various festivals, from their mobile ice cream counter.

Wed-Sat 12pm - 12am, Sun-Tue 12pm - 10pm | Rykestraße 40, 10405 Berlin - Prenzlauer Berg

Mos Eisley | GreenMe Berlin

The only thing making the beautiful sun set over Tempelhofer Feld in Neukölln even better is enjoying it with our favourite homemade ice cream from Mos Eisley in your hands. The small ice cream shop of Daniela Teuber, who learned her skills from the best at a Gelato University in Italy, is another destination where vegan ice cream dreams come true. Though not all vegan, you’ll always find a great variety of sorbets and weekly changing soy-based choices in their gelato cabinet at Herrfurthplatz!

Alongside the Italian classics and spins they serve up exceptional flavours you find nowhere else like Hazelnut-Soy, Apricot-Thyme or Cucumber-Tonic. Every day all their ice cream is made freshly for you with natural ingredients and lots of love: outstandingly delicious.

Tip: Keep an eye out for Zwei Dicke Bären ice cream sandwiches: A combination of homemade cookies and ice cream made by Mos Eisley on offer at foodie events around Berlin like Street Food Thursday or Bite Cub!

Paletas Berlin | GreenMe Berlin

Paletas is a real diamond amongst the local ice makers. These Berlin manufacturers specializing in ice popsicles make their yummy paletas from whole fruits and fresh ingredients since summer 2012. Enjoy the paletas ice lolly happiness in many cafés throughout Berlin or in their own shop in Friedrichshain.

With lots of vegan varieties (fruit sorbets as well as flavors based on coconut) we promise you taste explosions of blueberry cheesecake, strawberry-lime, buttermilk-lemon, mango coconut, raspberry-vanilla. Topped with toppings!

Look out for their popsicles at all types of events, markets or concerts - such as the legendary Green Market Berlin - or invite them to cater your own summer party. Anywhere and anytime - Paletas is an “I scream, ice cream” experience!

DUO Sicilian Ice Cream | GreenMe Berlin

Perfect to spend a sunny afternoon with ice cream and a really good Italian coffee in the middle of Berlin: the colorful Duo Sicilian Ice Cream parlour. Get excited about original Sicilian family ice recipes and coop sizes that don’t leave any wishes unfilled. This is ice cream exactly how it should taste. Thanks to the true talent and expertise of the owners you receive highest quality, amazing creamy consistency and no refined sugar or artificial flavor. If you’re someone who has a hard time to decide, then this is your place, as duo recommends you which two flavors go with each other best. Heaven!

Vegan (and non-vegan) hearts will be in love with the plant-based highlights on the menu (which makes up around 50% of all flavors) - which you can also turn into a divine milkshake: hazelnut, coconut, coffee, dark chocolate, nougat, pistachio, pineapple, raspberry, strawberry, and only here: avocado. They even got a sugar-free option! Big tasty plus: all the waffles are handmade and vegan. P.S. Coconut was to die for - you could taste its pure, natural ingredients like crunchy coconut chunks.

The location of Duo in the vibrant Kreuzberg area couldn’t be better. While there’s some serious ice cream making going on in the backroom, you can sit down and chill in their outdoor seating area, watch the iconic yellow Berlin metro ride by, or take your ice for a stroll around to the river Spree. We highly recommend you to visit this friendly family ice cream business and figure out your personal vegan ice-cream duo!

With more people than ever confined at home during this "pandemic", we have all had to adapt and change the dynamics of our everyday life. While not being able to leave our homes it might feel like our life has hit the pause button for any communal activities. However, it is more important - now than ever - that we keep the tape rolling and support our local communities and initiatives, and help them survive this difficult time. Just a few clicks away, here is a chance to get involved in some sustainable, kindhearted initiatives online in the comfort of your home.

Buy a voucher, redeem later

Another way to support local cafés, restaurants, shops and projects is by buying vouchers to your favourite places which you can redeem as soon as they open again. This is the mission of Helfen.Berlin, a non-profit that developed such a platform for the corona crisis (genius!). Our friends at Green Fashion Tours now offer great vouchers for their tours - a great opportunity to learn how your upcoming summer wardrobe could be more sustainable.

#2: SUPERMARKETS

Supermarkets are emptying faster than before as everyone tries to stock up. Good news though! With SIRPLUS, one of our favorite alternative supermarkets and Germany's first "food outlet", you can order food boxes, avoid the chaotic experience of the regular stores and on top save perfectly fine food from being wasted. In their famous “Retterbox” (rescue box) you can find some delicious surplus food with a vegetarian or vegan option, and save them from waste. Decrease food waste and CO2 emission all in one. To learn more about the story behind SIRPLUS check our podcast episode with co-founder Raphael Fellmer >

#3: RESTAURANTS

Farm to table - Fine dining at home!

When weekend comes around and you miss eating out and not having to cook, why not support your local restaurants by ordering some take away? Berlin's renowned fine dining Nobelhart & Schmutzig now offers a food box for its delicious and 100% local ingredient menu. With this offer you can really support the local farmers and agriculture that are struggling due to the closure of restaurants. So treat yourself to a special meal. Make sure to read our fun little interview with owner Billy Wagner, too >

Waste free dumplings

Another amazing restaurant to support is DingsDums Dumplings. This unique Berlin initiative creates delicious dumplings from surplus (saved) food! Now offering free delivering all over Berlin. Stock up on these frozen dumplings to spice up your meal this quarantine. Meet Anna, one of the passionate trio behind this innovative concept, in our podcast interview >

  • FREA: World’s first plant-based zero waste restaurant
  • Stadtfarm: Aquaponic farm delivering fish & veggie packages to your doorstep

#4: CHECK YOUR FINANCES

Finally, there's time to look where your money goes to. We all try to be more sustainable, to buy fair trade, to recycle and carry around a re-useable cup. However our money still sits in the bank financing all sorts of unsustainable practices all around the world. If you really want to know where your money goes and make sure it is only used in a sustainable way witch to Tomorrow Bank. This online banking startup is shaking the financial system - your bank account, which you can set up in 10 min, will only finance sustainable projects so that every time you use your card you can see in real time exactly how you are contributing to a better tomorrow.

#5: YOGA & MINDFULNESS

Having to isolate for so long can not only impact our physical, but also our mental health. It's important to keep moving - and how cool is it that we can now take classes of our favorite yoga teachers from anywhere? One of our most beloved studios, Jivamukti Yoga, is now offering online classes at 17:15 everyday so you don’t have to do your yoga alone. Many other studios start doing the same, so check the website of your go-to one. Combine it with the great meditation app Insight Timer, which provides you with different type of meditations depending on your mood that day, and have a peaceful quarantine.

THE CORONA CRISIS AND MOTHER EARTH

This outbreak has definitely given us an unintended benefit. Due to the strict quarantine restrictions put in place, causing a decrease in industrial activities and transport, there has been a dramatic drop-off in pollution and greenhouse gas emissions around the globe. With reports of cleaner air and water there is some very big lessons for our environment to take away from this crisis.

This crisis has shown us that emission can vanish quickly if we drastically reduce our fossil fuel consumption. According to Lauri Myllyvirta, an analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air in Finland, in only 4 weeks of quarantine China saw a 25% drop in their carbon dioxide emissions compared to the same time last year. In Venice, it’s murky canals recently began to clear up due to the absence of boat traffic. In New York, Prof Róisín Commane from Columbia University points out that they have never experienced such clean air, with carbon monoxide numbers less than half what they normally are in March.

As Christopher Jones, lead developer of the CoolClimate Network, said “If we can think about how to prepare for climate change like a pandemic, maybe there will be a positive outcome to all of this,”. We have now experienced what confinement feels like and proven that we can survive while consuming much less.

We might have thought it was too late and too difficult to tackle and restructure our economy. However, we have now been offered a blank sheet, an opportunity to restart our lives after this crisis in a new, peaceful, compassionate and more earth-friendly way 🌍

That's it, warriors of light. Keep up the positive vibes and stay healthy. We'll see you on the other side ✨ 💚

In Berlin, cycling is more than just a means of getting from A to B. It is a whole lifestyle - and fits perfectly into the eco conscious mindset of the local crowd. We asked our bike expert Sascha Möllering a.k.a. 60 seconds to put together the coolest projects and insider stories from the Berlin cycling scene. ENJOY!

Do you remember it? That feeling when the training wheels – or your dad’s belt around your hip – finally came off and you were actually riding a freaking a bike? For me, this was a magic moment of freedom, suddenly I was able to go anywhere, anytime in the blink of an eye. My radius for potential discoveries and mischief grew by an order of magnitude from one moment to the next. And this is what cycling – in Berlin and elsewhere – is all about: freedom.

For me, the bike was always the natural choice to get about; on most trips under 10km it is fastest, you can start and end anytime, anywhere, after the initial purchase of a bike and lock, cycling is virtually free, it’s a great workout and you even add value for society as a whole.

Admittedly, cycling in Berlin isn’t always fun, largely due to non-existent infrastructure and aggressive motorists. But nothing beats the feeling of breezing through empty streets on a warm summer night. The wind in you hair, the silent buzzing of your tires and the whirring of your hub - they all melt in with the sounds and smells creating this unbelievable fabric that makes Berlin, Berlin. On a bike you’re always a part of the city, like a fish is part of the pond society, while in a car or the subway, you are an alien only briefly surfacing for a specific task, before disappearing again in your steel cocoon.

CYCLING IN BERLIN: THE HISTORY & WHERE WE ARE TODAY

In some aspects Berlin is the perfect cycling city. It is more or less completely flat, we have wide roads thanks to the Prussian military and less people own a car here than in any other big city in Germany. The latter is a product of low wages and a great public transport system not necessarily a conscious decision. While in the 1980s and ‘90s it was mostly people like me, who rode their bikes all the time, fundamentalists, preachers of the bike gospel that were and are convinced that bikes have a role to play in saving the world. And then around the middle of the noughties something changed. A lot of people started to review their transportation solutions. Just looking at my friends, this was when a lot of them started to notice, their cars only ever left their parking spots for Ikea shopping or holidays. Riding a bike or taking public transport became the more rational choice. So, cycling started to transform, following two trends; a)it turned from a fun hobby to a serious commuting option, that was quicker and cheaper than any other mode of transport; and b) it became a lifestyle for the hip and progressive.

Cycling Berlin | Take A Break Bike Cafe

Take A Break Bike Cafe, Kreuzberg

Bikes became a tool of distinction as well as one of transport. Suddenly not only Mountain-bikers and roadies with their very specific and limited use of bikes started to spend 1.000s on their contraptions, but coders and marketing people in the start-ups and creative industries as well. One very visible marker for that was the Berliner Fahrradschau – a trade show for bikes, clothing and accessories that revolved around the idea of cycling as lifestyle. The now defunct gathering brought together such different people that were only unified through their love for two-wheeled transportation. The vibe of these shows, especially in the first couple of years was absolutely amazing. Seeing heavily tattooed messengers with their fixie-bikes shooting the breeze with a guy who creates functional suits for the cycling business man and the woman who teaches refugees how to ride a bike, really was something special. In the end, they couldn’t compete with the bigger, more mainstream Velo Berlin, who were forced to become a bit more avant-garde in turn. The grassroots buzz might be gone, but it now is a professionally organized tradeshow for all cyclists – even those that wear one of those ridiculous hi-viz vests voluntarily.

IS BERLIN A CYCLING CITY? LET'S TALK POLITICS...

Sadly, the latest relevant numbers for Berlin are from 2013, back then the modal share for the whole city was 13%, that means that 13% of all trips were done on a bike. In the inner city this share goes up to about 18%. Since then cycling has seemingly exploded, not because but despite what our local administration is doing. For a long time Berlin wasn’t even able to spend the money they did set aside to improve on bike infrastructure, mainly due to a lack of qualified personnel and complicated permit processes. So the city was happy to take the praise for more cyclists but not really doing much to help it along.

That started to change late in 2015, when Volksentscheid Fahrrad (~ Referendum Bicycle) entered the stage when they locked a golden bike in front of town hall with 10 demands for better cycling. First the higher echelons of local politics didn’t take the group around Heinrich Strößenreuther very seriously, but when they collected more than 100.000 signatures in just three weeks, shortly before the next election, they realized for the very first time that cyclists are actual voters. To avert the next step of the inititiave; a proper referendum, that would have put all those demands on the agenda as an actual law, they entered negotiations and a round-table came up with Europe’s first mobility law (MobG – sounds like a rapper, doesn’t it). That was put in effect almost exactly a year ago in the summer of 2018, since then – not much.

But - and let me make this very clear - compared to most other big cities, cycling in Berlin is a dream! Yes, we still have a long ahead of us, but we’re getting there and motorists are already used to giving bikes space, and only a small minority has yet to realize, that in the end, more dedicated infrastructure speeds up traffic for cars as well. For someone like me with a long inside perspective it’s just hard to acknowledge how we’ve already got considering the cyclist’s and pedestrian’s paradise in my head.

Now, after this little angry sermon, let me tell you about some really cool things from the Berlin cycling community.

10+ COOL PROJECTS FROM THE BERLIN CYCLING SCENE

Critical Mass Berlin

The Critical Mass (CM) has been around since the 1970s. As so many cool things it started in the Bay Area, San Francisco to be exact. It’s a worldwide community ride that happens every last Friday of the month.

In Berlin, a group of messengers have been doing this at least since the end of the 90s, with first only a handful of people and it only started picking up a larger following around 2013 and really exploded in the last three years. These days, in summer a couple of 1000s cyclists meet at Mariannenplatz, before conquering the streets of Berlin.

What makes CM special: it’s not a demonstration, it doesn’t have an organizer and it doesn’t have a fixed route. Instead it uses a loophole in German traffic law. If more than 15 cyclists ride together, they’re counting as one single vehicle. Which means, when the first in the group is crossing an intersection on a green light – all the rest can go as well, even if the light turns red.

If you’re in Berlin for one of those, make sure to join, it’s one of the nicest things you can do in Berlin.

Berlin Bike Tours

Platforms like komoot and others offer dozens of great rides you can do on your own, according to your own tastes and pace.

If you like a more social experience I suggest going on a guided bike tour with the likes of Berlin on Bike. They offer classical highlights tours for the Berlin newbie, that gives you an overview of all the major sights, plus some insights into gentrification and the changes since the fall of the Berlin Wall. If you’re interested in the latter specifically, they offer dedicated Berlin Wall and Cold War tours. As a repeating visitor you’ll probably be better off with one of their Alternative Tours

[Disclaimer, I write for Berlin on Bike and guide a Berlin Street Art tour every Friday afternoon.]

Only in Berlin: Riding Tempelhof

Tempelhof airport is among the best things Berlin has to offer; more than 3km3 of completely open space and riding you bike on an actual runway is kind of magical, especially considering the fact, that this was the first commercial airport in Europe.

Where To Rent A Bike in Berlin?

If you just need a bike real quick to get from place to another and both of them are inside the ring, you’re ok using Jump by Uber, mobike or one of the other sharing operators. But if you need vehicle to cruise around all day, you’re better off with a regular rental service like Berlin on Bike or Fat Tire. These all charge around 10€ a day with a decent selection of bikes.

If you want more style and speed on your ride and are willing to spend it more, there’s the shop of Berlin manufacturer 8bar , that rent sleek and fast single-speeds and racing bikes starting at 18€/day. Radkreuz are offering proper road racers starting 25€/day, but I only suggest those for training purposes, as a means of transportation, they’re not very good, because a lot of roads are in a bad state or even cobblestones.

To wrap that up, I want to introduce you to two companies with a slightly different business model. First there is listnride, the airbnb equivalent for bicycles, where you can get everything from a cruiser to a tandem or a proper full-suspension Mountainbike (yes, there is good mountainbiking to be had in Berlin).

And last but not least, we have Rent a Bike 44 in Neukölln. They collect cheap, rundown bikes, fix them and rent them out for as little as 4€ a day, the idea being, that a bike should be cheaper than a day pass for public transport. None of the bikes are especially stylish or great, but they are unbranded and in good working order, so you’re not even recognizable as a visitor and can just flow along traffic without anybody being the wiser.

IMPORTANT TIP: Whatever you do, please never rent a bike from a Späti or a restaurant. These red bike stands in front of small shops all belong to the same operator and at least half of their bikes are a security risk for you and others.

Cycling As A Tool For Integration And Social Development

Internationally World Bicycle Relief is promoting cycling as a meaningful tool for development, but until a short time ago, that fact got largely ignored in the global north. That changed shortly after a huge influx of refugees in 2015.

That’s when people got together and created Bikeygeesan NGO that teaches women – not only, but mainly refugees - how to ride a bike and donate them bikes once they’re comfortable enough to take part in Berlin traffic. Mobility is essential if you want to participate and connect with the society you’re part of and it’s amazing to see, how much change this simple tool and knowledge makes possible. For some of those women the experience to be independently able to move around was transforming in a way that is hard to grasp for us. So, if you happen to have an old bike lying around or tools or locks, or if you want to help teaching, please contact them.

Rückenwind is another initiative combining bikes and support for refugees that goes even further and is open to both genders. In their Neukölln workshop, refugees and locals get together to repair bikes, teach how to ride, and helps them get jobs and much more.

All in all, there are dozens of grassroots project surrounding bikes, so if you look for a place to actively participate, you’ll find something not too far.

Berlin's Coolest Bike Shops

DIY-Bamboo bikes: Ozone cyclery offers workshops to build your very own bamboo bike. So not only, do you get a bike that has been made from a sustainable source, that is exactly to your geometry specifications, you get a bespoke bike, that you made yourself – of course there’s always help and support available. Their latest project is a bullitt-style cargobike!

Standert Bicycles amazingly enough was the first combination of bike shop and café when it opened a few years ago. They design their own frames as well and combine them with sensible components to create sporty, urban bikes that look just as good on the road as on the wall of your living-room (yes, I want one, in case you’re wondering). On top of that they are a big hub for the messenger community, and do regular group rides after work and on the weekend.

Tip: Learn about the story & values of Standert Bicycles in this episode of the GreenMe Podcast >

Another fascinating one-stop-shop for all things velo is BICICLI that is not only a sales showroom, but offers solutions for companies, that want to decarbonize their fleet and figured out ways to give people company bikes, for very little cost, finance these ideas and much much more.

Tip: Check out BICICLI on the GreenMe Map >

Last but not least: according to most, radspannerei builds the best custom wheels in town. If they’re not doing that, they are a typical neighbourhood bike shop, that’s happy to help out everyone.

Berlins Best Frame Builders and Manufacturers

The most prominent and successful of those is probably Schindelhauer, whose bikes all come with a gates drive instead of a chain. That makes their sleek urban creations extremely low-maintenance. The typical cutout in the seat tube to narrow the wheel base, creates a very nimble ride, ideal for zooming between cars and pedestrians in a crowded city. Technically those bikes are designed and assembled in Berlin with the real frame production happening in Asia, nonetheless they are local heroes with a huge following, especially in the messenger scene.

Other notable bike creators

Ostrad is a small and cozy old-school bike shop with an attached workshop where they build beautiful lugged steel frames. Each bike is one-of-a-kind product manufactured exactly to your specifications.

Meerglas  focusses on extremely well-made and beautiful randonneurs and gravel bikes, for those of you, who want something that takes you everywhere – even around the world. Sharing both that philosophy and a workshop is Fernrad.

Wheeldan is Berlin’s only frame builder to use titan tubes for his projects.

Big Forest is in Potsdam and famous for his gravel and mountain bikes with clever design solutions.

This list is by no means complete, but I think a good start, if you’re really looking into getting a custom-made bicycle frame from Berlin.

Let’s face the truth – compared to Berlin, the beautiful but more conservative Munich has less green, organic, fair trade & vegan places to offer. Surely, if you think of Munich, the first things that come to mind are probably the Oktoberfest and hearty, meaty meals like Weißwurst and Schweinshaxe. But even in one of the most quintessential “German” cities in the South, the green movement is unstoppable and more and more earth-conscious places are setting up shop.

Stefanie from peace-panda.de went criss cross through the city to find the best fairtrade, organic and vegan shops and cafes for you.

10 BEST SUSTAINABLE PLACES IN MUNICH

Here's my choice of the coolest green spots in Germany's capital of beer gardens & Lederhosen:

Sustainable Guide Munich - Ohne | GreenMe Guides

The cozy shop “Ohne” (which means “without”) sells food items, but also lots of other enticing natural products such as cosmetics, soaps, and cleaning detergent - all completely without packaging. The food section is filled with fresh fruits and veggies, grains, spices, oils and delicious nut spreads. If not package-free, the goods are sold in glass containers or metal boxes instead of plastic.

Apart from daily groceries, the shop has an awesome selection of books about zero waste and minimalist lifestyle, slow family and do-it-yourself. If you want to stay a little longer, the shop offers cake and coffee which you can enjoy while sitting down and watch the people passing by.

To buy the package-free goods, you just bring and weigh your own jar or bag, or purchase one of the containers that the shop provides. In December 2018, the big zero waste guru Bea Johnson even stepped by for a visit. And the fact that there’s already two stores in town speaks for itself.

Sustainable Guide Munich - Tigerflicka | GreenMe Guides

A cute little shop opened by the Swedish chemist Dr. Cecilia George in 2013 during her second pregnancy. The handmade soaps, creams and oils were initially created for the sensitive baby-skin and contain only eco-friendly ingredients, carefully selected according to their scientifically proven effects. What I really like about their products is that they’re totally multi-use – the baby barn cream, for example, can be used for the sensitive nappy area, but also to protect the baby’s facial skin against cold air or to make your own hands smooth in the dry, cold winter.

Tigerflicka’s motto for the list of ingredients is “less is more”. All skincare products contain 100% natural ingredients, no conservatives (which are not needed as the products don’t contain water), and no silicone oils or any other artificial substances. They also avoid plastic during their production. Note that not all of their products are vegan, as some of them contain bee’s wax.

The shop (& laboratory) is shared with an arts and crafts shop from Sweden and once or twice a month Tigerflicka offers an evening course on how to make your own soap.

Sustainable Guide Munich - Emmis Kitchen | GreenMe Guides

Emmi’s Kitchen is a vegan cafe in the backyard of a Jivamukti Yoga center. Drop by for a delicious salad, a superfood bowl, a burger (incl. the famous “beyond meat” burgers), smoothies or pancakes – everything is 100% vegan!

Whenever the weather allows, I’d recommend to sit outside, so that the (delicious) burger smell from the open kitchen doesn’t stick to your clothes 🙂 And if you’re into yoga you HAVE to visit the Jivamukti Yoga Center (including a small yoga shop) across the backyard - but best before indulging in Emmi’s burgers...

Buttermelcherstr. 11-15, 80469 München -Glockenbachviertel | Closest metro: U1/U2 Fraunhoferstraße

Sustainable Guide Munich - Dear Goods | GreenMe Guides

At Dear Goods you will find vegan organic fairtrade fashion, accessories and innovative beauty products. The three hearts in their logo represents their love and compassion for humans, animals and the environment - how sweet!

Dear Goods’ biggest focus lies on sustainable production. For example, they offer bags made from apple (!) leather. How good is that? If they can’t avoid using plastic for certain product packages, it is at least 100% recycled plastic. Besides their beautiful clothes I can highly vouch for the soap pads. They can be used for cleaning as well, as well as the soap bags which transform your soap into a peeling at the same time. Told ya, I love multi-use!

Tip: Dear Goods also has a store in Berlin, right on Prenzlauer Berg's famous "vegan alley".

Sustainable Guide Munich - Tushitas Teehaus | GreenMe Guides

The cozy teahouse is one of the first completely vegan cafes in Munich. A real institution so to say. Amongst a huge variety of high quality teas (around 150 different types, all organic), cake, desserts and vegan lunch bowls you will also bump into a lot of yoga teachers and students - always a good sign.

Some of the daily cakes are even gluten- and sugar-free. Like you’d expect in a proper tea house, you can also buy a variety of teas, cups, matcha sets and lots of accessories for making really good tea at home to nurture your body and soul. Everything is also available in their webshop along with lots of information about the tea sorts and accessories. But of course, it’s even better to swing by and talk to real people 😉

Klenzestraße 53, 80469 München - Glockenbachviertel | Closest metro: U1/U2 Fraunhoferstraße

Sustainable Guide Munich - Phasenreich | GreenMe Guides

Phasenreich is a beautiful fair trade concept store and as such a mix between a coffee shop (with quite a few vegan cake options), a fashion store for men, women and kids and a gift/beauty shop – all organic and as sustainable as possible of course. Phasenreich was founded in 2014 by Shino and Bianca, who both come from the fashion world and wanted to use their expertise do transform it for the better.

In the gift section of the shop you can find a range of ingenious creative articles - such as a small tree that can charge your iPhone with solar energy.

Reichenbachstraße 23, 80469 München - Glockenbachviertel | Closest metro: U1/U2 Fraunhoferstraße

Sustainable Guide Munich - Auryn | GreenMe Guides

Just a few steps further from Phasenreich is the beautiful auryn – a colorful fair fashion & toys shop for kids and mums, which sells organic & fairtrade clothes, toys, deco products, books and postcards. All items are 100% organic, fairtrade and sustainably produced. Most of their toys are made from organic wood - bye bye plastic.

The shop, founded by Christine Frehe-Reynartz, already exists since over 23 years! The proof that good things last

Sustainable Guide Munich - Kraeutergarten | GreenMe Guides

At Kräutergarten (which translates to herbal garden) you will find more than 1000 herbs (90% organic) which you can buy unpackaged or in small glass jars. What a little plantpower oasis: the shop also sells spices and teas, natural remedies, cosmetics, essential oils and more.

They also provide ingredients and how-to-guides to make your own natural cosmetics at home. Very empowering. If you are interested in learning more about herbs and natural cosmetics, just ask the friendly staff about their herbal tours and cosmetics courses.

Sustainable Guide Munich - Veganista | GreenMe Guides

Veganista leaves no fashionistas dreams unfulfilled. The inviting shop sells anything from vegan clothes, shoes, bags & jewelry, mostly fair-trade and organic, and made by famous vegan brands such as Armed Angels or People tree. Rest assured that Rahel and Bettina put a lot of effort and heart in helping you find your new favourit pieces.

On their website you will find a detailed WHY explanation alongside the inspiring philosophy behind the shop.

10) Max Pett... Das vegane Restaurant (Altstadt)

Sustainable Guide Munich - Max Pett | GreenMe Guides

Another gem for anyone joining the plant-based revolution, or simply wanting to try something new: At this cool vegan restaurant you can taste yourself through a variety of fresh, earth- and animal-friendly food at a really reasonable price. MaxPett is named after Prof. Dr. Max von Pettenkofer, which helped to improve the hygienic situation in the 19th century in Munich tremendously. As one of the few restaurants in Munich they do not serve alcohol (the professor was chairman of an anti-alcohol-organisation).

A dish that you MUST try is the Kaiserschmarrn (sort of a scrambled pancake, veeery famous in Bavaria) with strawberries, ice cream and whipped cream. Every Friday from 3-5pm they even have a Kaiserschmarrn happy hour! Happy indulging!

Since 2017 the owners also offer vegan cooking classes near the Ammersee (a stunning lake close to Munich).

BONUS: The Green Lungs of Munich

Sustainable Guide Munich - Westpark | GreenMe Guides

Most people have heard of the “English Garten” – the biggest park in Munich (and Germany!), which is even larger than the New York Central Park. Best place to recharge and soak in some fine urban nature.
On top of that, Munich has lots more green to offer:

Especially in spring and summer, the Flaucher area with a long walk along the riverside, a beer garden and amazing bicycle paths is a great spot to spend a day out in the green. Make sure to bring a towel and your bathing suit and dip your feet into the cold Isar water. Or just chill out with your friends in the grass and throw some food on a BBQ, or have some cold drinks while enjoying lazy summer evenings.

One of my favourite green places is also the Westpark, where you can find the cute cafe “Gans am Wasser” offering coffee, crepes, ice cream, french fries AND seitan burgers made from regional and organic ingredients. As soon as the temperatures rise the place is packed, so better bring a picnic blanket and simply sit in the grass anywhere near the cafe while enjoying food, drinks and a nice view over the lake.

BONUS: Beer Gardens

Sustainable Guide Munich - Beer Gardens | GreenMe Guides

When talking about Munich’s nicest places we CAN’T leave out the beer gardens, of course. But how is this vegan or eco you might ask? Well, for starters: You are allowed to bring your own food to any of the beer gardens (and most of the beer if not all of it is vegan).

Also - believe it or not - more and more beer gardens offer vegan food (for example the Taxisgarten), including brezen (prezels) and french fries. (Note: sometimes brezen can be made with lard and french fries can be fried in the same oil as meat, so better ask.

Do you know where your clothes come from and how they're being made? We say: It's time for an ethical fashion revolution!

The times where ethical designs, organic materials and fair production were hiding in the shade are over. And with the Neonyt 2019 (formerly Ethical Fashion Show Berlin) just coming up, we thought it’s time to share a few thoughts on why it matters to know how our clothes are being made and where they come from.

Berlin knows how to do ethical fashion right. Looking at the fashion industry as a whole, sustainable fashion is Berlin’s USP and has a worldwide reputation for being the hub of green trends in the textile sector.

Curious to see where Berlin’s most creative green fashion labels and store owners have set up shop? Then come on our GreenMe Tours, where sustainable fashion is always one of the topics (private tours upon request). Let's meet the makers of Berlin's vibrant eco scene - local producers, shop owners, designers and social projects - and get an insight into their amazing work.

THE GLOBAL HUB FOR ETHICAL FASHION

Berlin is the mecca for anyone working or interested in green fashion. With a strongly connected scene, lots of industry-related talks and networking events and an array of opportunities to try yourself out, the city keeps drawing in sustainable clothing labels, upcycling designers and creatives from all over the world.

Considering the boost in popularity and public awareness, it’s surprising that Berlin is the ONLY city where international sustainable fashion shows are running parallel to the conventional Fashion Week.

Premiere in 2019: The Ethical Fashion Show Berlin and The Green Showroom are merging together into one brand new format: the Neonyt Trade Fair & Conference 2019. For three days, this will be the global hub for sustainability and innovation in fashion. The FashionSustain conference and #FashionTech are happening under the same umbrella, turning Berlin into a hotspot for future-oriented fashion concepts.

Throughout the week, the entire global fashion scene will stream into the city - and will ultimately be inspired by the most future-oriented green labels and designers. Neonyt 2019 is set in the stunning halls of Kraftwerk Berlin, a former power station right by the river Spree, industry experts and changemakers will set the tone on how a sustainable future could look like. Topics include digitisation & technology, smart materials and circularity.

Check out all details about Neonyt Berlin 2019 & be there when green fashion takes over the city for 3 days. And don't miss out all the other cool events happening around Fashion Week - check our events calendar to get an overview.

Part of this dedicated bunch of changemakers is Carina Bischof, co-founder of upcycling label aluc and the Upcycling Fashion Berlin movement. We had an inspiring chat about the status quo of fair fashion in Berlin and beyond. Listen to the full interview on the GreenMe Podcast.

Another important initiative for the future of fashion is Sourcebook. From their office in a Kreuzberg backyard, the team is providing a strong B2B platform with 2000+ members! Through their trusted network, they are directly connecting local textile producers and manufacturers with a fast growing community of makers and creatives of the design sector. By providing expert education, workshops and resources, Sourcebook is passionately promoting sustainability and transparency within the fashion- and textile industry. Why So Perfect Honey | Ethical Fashion Berlin

One of our favorite messages, t-shirt created by our friends of Mit Ecken und Kanten

5 BENEFITS OF BUYING ETHICAL FASHION

Let's get things clear: Generally, we're big fans of minimalism. Consuming less and focussing on the things we really need is for sure the most eco-friendly choice - and incredibly freeing. Also a good idea: re-using the things that came out of the global production cycle (which is a hell of a lot!).

But there are times where we just need to buy something new. If that’s the case, we should stop being cheap skates and keep an eye on fair production, human rights and clean, organic & sustainable materials.

Sounds overwhelming?

We tell you: in Berlin, it isn’t! There is such a cool new wave of sustainable chic, plus heaps of modern street wear labels that make fair fashion fun and accessible for everyone. No need to wear hippie pants or earthy, “potato-sacky” clothes anymore.

THE BIGGEST BENEFITS OF BUYING FAIR FASHION

#1 You help saving the planet

Fast fashion factories leave a whole lot of shitty chemicals behind and use massive amounts of energy. So, if you pick organic fabrics, you reduce your carbon footprint and protect your own health, too. After all, it’s what we wear on our skin!

#2 You help the people who make your clothes

We guess you’ve heard about some of the ugly things that happen in the production plants, especially in developing countries. By buying fair trade clothes you make sure that the label cares about it’s people at least as much as about making a profit.

#3 It lasts much longer!

It’s a fact - clothes made from organic, renewable fibers are not only less toxic, but also much more durable! So if higher prices hold you back, do the maths 🙂

#4 You truly appreciate your clothes

Not only does it make you consume less (cause it costs a bit more and lasts longer) - knowing where your clothes come from, who made it, what’s the story behind it… I LOVE every single piece I bought eco and it makes me feel happy to wear them. Plus, they just look and feel SO much better than H&M!

#5 You support and give back to people

Green fashion is not all about the environment. It's about fellow humans, people who either live in less fortunate places than us, or work hard to make a living with their creative crafts. No matter if in India or Berlin, small scale artists and designers need our support to withstand against the fast fashion giants.

Events like the Fashion Revolution Week, as well as our GreenMe Tours and Circular Economy Tours remind us that each and everyone of us has a choice. And every piece we consume makes a statement. Let's try to look a bit closer from now on and support those brands who get it right.

But how can we find out who is, without spending hours of research? How can we be sure which clothing brands really care and aren’t just fast fashion in green disguise?

Easy: there are SO many amazing designers, labels and ethical fashion stores in Berlin. Numbers growing. Wanna know which ones to check out first? Here comes our choice:

The bright, brick-walled interior, an amazing swing hanging in the middle of the shop and a very friendly team just make you wanna stay. Whether it's clothes, jewelry or accessories - everything they sell is truly beautiful, trendy, hip and approachable. Forget the boring, old-fashioned eco-image, this is the happy future!

Good news: over just 2 years, LOVECO has opened two more branches! Swing by at the Kreuzberg store, which is quickly becoming Berlin’s no.1 address for eco-fair, vegan shoes. Tucked away on a side street off the canal in Kreuzberg, you’ll be dazzled by the high ceilings, the wooden door and the stucco walls.

The latest addition to the LOVECO family is finally bringing eco-fair fashion to Schöneberg! A warm, inviting space, where you can easily hang out for a while. On roughly 100 m2, the store stocks all the handpicked favorites & beautiful brands that make LOVECO such a pleasure to visit.

P.S. LOVECO founder & owner Christina Wille was our very first podcast guest - listen to the episode here >>

On another note, LOVECO has also been a major support in making our very first VeganBerlin Guide possible <3

FOLKDAYS (Kreuzberg)

Just a stone’s throw from Kreuzberg's Markthalle Neun you’ll find the marvelous showroom of FOLKDAYS. They’re a young fair fashion label from Berlin, which I instantly fell in love with, as each product is handcrafted and tells us a unique story of far-away cultures. Living out their own passion for artisan products, every piece you find in the store is handmade using the finest materials and represents a specific craft, culture and tradition. With their beautiful products, they build a bridge to artisans in hard-to-reach countries and thus support small local producers to make a living through their craft.

P.S. Listen to our podcast interview with FOLKDAYS founder Lisa Jaspers: Empowering remote communities while building a business you love >>

Supermarché (Kreuzberg)

“Better wear fair” - that’s the motto of this bustling concept store in Kreuzberg. Far away from being a supermarket, Supermarché likes the irony and offers fair trade, organic streetwear and ethically produced living accessories. It’s our go-to shop to buy (nice-looking!) organic underwear, comfy leggings and colorful socks. And while their own label Hirschkind makes cool t-shirts and bed sheets - embellished through screen-printing which happens just around the corner - Supermarché also works with some awesome Berlin eco brands, incl. Jyoti, Minga, umiwi or Little Sun. Moreover, they boast one of the biggest eco-fair jeans collection in town, a range of fair trade sneakers and upcycled items, bags made from recycled plastic. The whole team is very active in pushing the green fashion movement forward, so watch out for cool events, talks and workshops.

P.S. Berlin’s famous package-free supermarket, Original Unverpackt, is right next door.

Standard Saubere Sachen (Kreuzkölln)

One of my best-loved little stores in the Kiez. Katharina and Kathrin are giving all they can to make sustainable, “clean” fashion become a standard (hence why the name). The sell only products made from ecological, natural and fairly sourced materials. Brands and designers are changing regularly and the focus is on pieces that make us look great for more than just one season. Apart from fashion, they also sells a range of ingenious little items to green our lives, such as cosmetics, tea, paper items, liquors, glass ware and more. Again, every piece has its own story - and some make a great guilt-free gift, too. (It’s our no. 1 address for beautiful last-minute birthday shops).

Corvera Vargas (Kreuzkölln)

Just a stones throw from bustling Maybachufer, this pretty boutique is home to Bolivian-born expat and fashion designer Maria Corvera and her friendly team. She started her Berlin brand in 2013, with the desire to combine timeless, elegant styles with contemporary, straight and pure designs - skilfully mixed with influences from Bolivia, Bali and Mexico. Nearly all garments are designed and sewed here in Berlin - sometimes even right in front of your eyes in the shop’s built-in atelier. And the knitted alpaca pullovers are the result of a partnership with a cooperative from Maria’s home in Bolivia. There are no intermediaries, no profiteering, all the money goes straight to them. Generally, the team works towards raising awareness and appreciation for the clothes we wear, as well as for fair working conditions in the fashion industry worldwide.

WESEN (Neukölln North)

Not far away lies Weserstraße - a looong street that forms the beating heart of this area. It is home to SO many vintage stores, independent designers and innovative Berlin fashion labels. Just like WESEN, a beautiful store run by dedicated female fashion-preneur Mareike, producing exclusive ethical fashion under her own label format. With the workshop and atelier in the back, the front is open as a showroom where they sell their own creations, complemented by a selection of like-minded designers, making things like eco-fair boots, underwear and jewelry. All have the same goal: making top notch products that follow the highest ethical standards - and, of course, make you look and feel great. The showroom is an open place to meet and exchange, so swing by and say hi.

Süßstoff (Neukölln South)

A bit further South in Schillerkiez (right near Tempelhofer Feld), this colorful little store sells clothes, accessories and artful gifts, which are fairly produced and 100% vegan. It is run by fair fashion designer Jenny - the face behind the beautiful organic label Börd Shört. Süßstoff is her atelier & store, where she also sells other amazing eco fair brands for women and men - some of them come right from the neighborhood, too. Next to clothes, the offer ranges from organic cosmetics, creative laptop cases and fine handmade jewelry to playful accessories, made by Jenny using leftover materials from her Bördshört lines.

SHIO Store (Neukölln)

Did you know that there is 10 to 20% of waste generated in each step of the textile and clothing production? Thank god, there are some passionate designers out there who want to change that. Like Kate Pinkstone, owner of the beautiful SHIO Store. All her designs have a strong focus on upcycling - taking garments that are already there and giving them a new life by improving elements and cuts. We are big fans of Kate’s creations, as they are absolutely timeless, pure and wearable everyday (as opposed to the sometimes very extravagant patterns and shapes of other upcycling brands). To find materials, she strolls over flea markets and always keeps an eye on what’s high quality and will last a long time. With this reuse-reduce-recycle approach, Kate is also one of the stars on our Circular Economy Tour & Dinner sessions. Keep in touch to learn when we host the next one.

ECOALF (Mitte)
Because there is no planet B! Berlin’s ethical fashion crowd rejoiced when the new flagship store of Spanish-born label Ecoalf opened its doors in 2017. Located in the heart of Mitte’s go-to area for trendy clothing labels, Ecoalf proves that wasting the natural resources of our planet to look good is so yesterday. Instead, the certified BCorp is transforming plastic waste, fishing nets and coffee grounds into high-quality upcycled clothing. Frustrated by the overuse and overproduction in the Western world and a strong urge to leave the world better for his son Alfredo (hence why the name), president and founder Javier Goyeneche decided to create the first fashion line that only uses recycled materials. All while achieving the same quality and modern design as the best non-recycled ones and building a new generation of conscious consumers. Not enough: with their Upcycling The Oceans campaign, they empower local fishermen in Spain and Thailand to save their livelihoods and play an active part in cleaning the bottom of the ocean and turning this waste into top quality products. Today Ecoalf has recovered over 280 tons of waste thanks to the support of over 3,000 fishermen..

The Berlin store is an eye catcher, ultra-spacious, with urban industrial elements mixed in with nature and plants. It offers much more than just fashion, e.g. architecture, design, books and beauty for a holistic experience of sustainable lifestyle. The back area is often used as events space, so watch out for the next gathering.

Wertvoll Berlin (Prenzlauer Berg)

A real institution in Berlin’s ethical fashion scene, Wertvoll has been the first eco-fashion store in the city! Opened in times when hardly anyone heard about fair fashion before, this pretty boutique has done an amazing job to put the spotlight on elegant, smart and high quality labels, vegan shoes and fairly produced accessories. With established brands ranging from Armed Angels to Maska, Kings of Indigo and Haikure, they’re proving that eco fashion is exciting, sophisticated and feels amazing to wear.

It's this very special time of the year again: Everyone is getting into crazy Christmas mode. While most people are bustling around, trying to find the right (but often useless) presents for their loved ones, we invite you to take a deep breath in the midst of this magical-mystical season.

You don’t want to buy random presents under last minute pressure this year? And you're in this dilemma to find the right gifts to show friends and family your love and appreciation and at the same time stay away from all the overconsumption, right? Worry not, we’re here to inspire you how to give - with a beautiful conscious twist.

Let’s inhale this truth: We don’t prove our love by spending money. Let alone on common material gifts that often lack inspiration, are damaging our environment or the health of people who make them. That’s why we want to encourage you to be part of the change you want to see in your world: Spread excitement and joy about a more sustainable and conscious future under the Christmas tree!

To make this all a little easier and less time-consuming for you, we put together our favorite sustainable Christmas gifts and tell you where to find them locally in Berlin or order them online.

Pssst... there's a chance to win one of our recommended gifts further down in this article. GOOD LUCK!

SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS GIFTS - How to give without compromising OUR planet

#1: Gift a voucher that helps stopping food waste

Sustainable Christmas Gifts - SirPlus Retterbox

Retterbox, © SIRPLUS

Within one year of being open, SirPlus have already saved and sold tons of high quality food that would have otherwise been thrown away. Did you know they recently opened their fourth (!) outlet in Friedrichshain? No matter where you are in Berlin, there’s many options to get their products and help to stop this crazy food waste.

1: Put a voucher for their online store under the Christmas tree!
2: Give away one of their monthly “Retterboxes”, classic, organic, vegan or the special winter edition.
3: Together is always better: why not inspire your friends or family and take them to one of the SirPlus stores for a zero waste shopping spree?

Learn more about SirPlus and the views and visions of one of Berlin’s most inspirational social entrepreneurs & SirPlus co-founder, Raphael Fellmer.

Other awesome places to get a zero waste voucher: Berlin's package-free supermarkets, Original Unverpackt and Der Sache Wegen

#2: Support a project with a good cause

Sustainable Christmas Gifts - Little Sun , Little Diamond

Little Diamond by Little Sun © Thabo Metsing

There are plenty of great projects out there to support, from NGO's to social startups on a mission to tackle the world's most pressing issues. Very close to our heart is Little Sun: What started as a humble idea to create a small, portable solar lamp for people without electricity in Ethiopia is now a global project that has changed over a million lives through the invaluable power of the sun.

Meanwhile, they created a range of beautiful products, from the original sun-shaped solar lamp (our favorite), on to solar chargers for your phone and the latest edition of Little Diamond which you can see above - all of these are perfect gifts for anyone who loves the outdoors and to be in nature.

Learn more about Little Sun, their artful products and how you can support them, while also lighting up the hearts and lives of your loved ones.

Another passionate organization that brings solar power to the remotest regions in the Amazon is the wonderful Love for Life Project - a Berlin-based NGO we can fully vouch for!

#3: Give a reusable coffee cup, drinking bottle or lunch box

Sustainable Christmas Gifts - Kaffeeform, Weducer Cup

Kaffeeform (Weducer Cup)

Sustainable Christmas Gifts - soulbottles

Soulbottles

Giving a bottle of wine or liquor is such a common gift given at all kind of occasions. Most people have more than enough bottles at home. How about a beneficial bottle instead of booze: Soulbottles. Your donees will be thinking of you every time they use it and at the same time they save the environment by avoiding plastic!

The same applies for food. A good alternative to good old Tupperware is a stainless steel lunch box e.g. by Eco Brotbox available online or in Berlin's plastic-free stores Original Unverpackt or Der Sache Wegen. These lunch boxes help inspire more conscious and planned eating instead of take-aways causing tons of plastic waste.

Interested how a reusable coffee cup can be even more sustainable? Then check out the story of young founder Julian introducing their innovative project Kaffeeform. Their coffee cups built from recycled coffee grounds are definitely one of our top gift recommendations!

#4: Back up local ethical stores instead of hitting the big malls

Sustainable Christmas Gifts - LOVECO

Whether its socks for dad, a scarf for mummy or a necklace or armband for your best friend - classic gifts can be exciting if they were produced without exploitation. Check out our Ethical Fashion Guide for Berlin to find out where to buy unique and conscious clothing and accessories.

Some of favorite shops that are filled with eco-fair gifts: LOVECO , Supermarché , Standard Saubere Sachen

Prefer to give moments, not things? Then get a voucher from our friends at the Green Fashion Tours  to go on a tour and meet the designers and shop owners in some of Berlin's coolest areas.

#5: Surprise a foodie with our new VeganBerlin Guide

Sustainable Christmas Gifts - VeganBerlin Guide

If you’re looking for the ideal gift for a passionate foodie that doesn’t leave a hole in your wallet, we created just the right thing for you:

Fresh out of the printing press, the second edition of our VeganBerlin Guide is a lovingly curated collection of over 70 colorful vegan and vegan-friendly gems - designed to help people explore Berlin with fun, ease and lots of good karma. VeganBerlin is a foldable map and a co-production by us and our friend Berta from Walk This Way. On one side, we crafted three different routes, guiding you through Berlin’s most creative vegan neighborhoods from breakfast to cocktail hour. On the other side, you’ll find our favorite Berlin vegan hotspots – cafés, restaurants, bars, shops, activities and other curious highlights that will get both vegans and non-vegans excited.

Order VeganBerlin now and be relaxed for the rest of the month. Final order date to get it in time for Christmas: 18th December 2019.

Bonus: What money can't buy - give time and good moments

Sustainable Christmas Gifts - KekLo, vegan brunch Berlin

It’s the easiest gift and you can share it with the person you’re handing it to: Give your loved ones a special experience and time with you. A hike in nature, a visit to your favorite theatre, cinema, or the planetarium, an evening of cooking together, a shared wellness day... Just think about what your gifted one is into or could really need these days and spend some memorable happy hours together in 2019!

And this could be anything – big or small. How about taking him/her out for a big Berlin brunch at your favorite local café? We did some research this year and invite you to eat your way through Berlin's best vegan brunch places (especially great in January for some after-holiday-munching) 🙂

Most important: Make it fun and easy!

An idea especially for grown up changemakers: Think about decrease spending, stress and waste by having family members draw names, sticking to a 'one gift' rule = Each person gets one thoughtful gift from someone who had the time to dedicate their effort.

MORE Tips FOR SUSTAINABLE GIFTS & a CONSCIOUS Christmas:

Rounding off this sustainable gift guide, here are a few simple thoughts to consider before you write your shopping list:

  • Consider buying books in a fair bookstore instead of supporting online retail giants.
  • A new phone is on the wish list? Why not weigh the benefits of the Fairphone in comparison to top selling smartphones.
  • Wooden instead of plastic toys for your little ones, maybe you could support someone who handcrafts things or buy second hand?
  • If you want to spoil the ladies, look at natural cosmetic products without any plastics, metals or nasty chemical ingredients
  • Want to give chocolates or other yummy treats? Focus on ensuring fair trade standards. Check out this video to learn more
  • When wrapping your gift, consider the gift wrapping - here are some wonderful ideas

That's it, conscious Christmas fans ⛄🎄

We hope you got some inspiration for sustainable gifts and compassionate giving this year. Keep in mind, less is more and it is the thought behind your gift that counts. Believe us: Giving a thoughtful gift to someone you care about is also a present you’ll be making to yourself!

Remember to slow down, light candles and connect with others.

Happy conscious giving and Merry Christmas to you from all of us at GreenMe Berlin 💚

DINGSDUMS DUMPLINGS: BERLIN'S FRESHEST SOLUTION AGAINST FOOD WASTE

Download & listen to the episode on iTunes | on Stitcher | on Youtube

„We have to make it mainstream. Like there is no other way" - Anna Wohlrab, DingsDumsDumplings

The topic of food waste - or better anti food waste - has popped up a lot around us lately - and I’m so grateful that (apart from all the daunting numbers of how much food is being wasted) it mainly came up with a positive solution in tow.

Usually in the form of a dedicated group of people, who tackles this issue, without waiting until governments or the big players out there do something. They have an epiphany that there’s just too much food waste and we gotta do something about it!

That’s exactly what happened to today’s interview guest & her co-founders. And I’m so excited that we finally make this interview happen with Anna from DingsDums Dumplings (@dingsdumsdumplings)!

Saving food alone is great, but then there’s the question what to do with all these 5 million tons of edible food that us Germans throw away each year? How to turn them into something that’s tasty and extends its shelf life even further?

Together the three young founders, Jillian, Mauritz and Anna found a way to make it happen: As DingsDums Dumplings, they are creating super delicious dumplings from surplus food.

***Just a quick moment to remind you that you can sign up to our newsletter to not miss any future episodes. Look forward to connecting!***

IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

  • The entire thought process & trial and error sessions that happened before the actual launch of DingsDums Dumplings
  • The moment that triggered the three to quit their jobs & to do something about food waste
  • How important it is to focus on the core thing: a strong product (that looks great, tastes delicious)
  • How to deal with non-believers in your environment - and proving them all wrong
  • One thing Anna is most proud of at the moment
  • Who or what inspired her most on her way
  • Her secrets to overcome challenges and always stay motivated
  • How Jilliane creates new recipes on the spot over and over again
  • How to be in for the long game
  • Why it’s important to surround yourself with the right people
  • The power of starting small & convincing the big players
  • The meaning of being awarded by the Federal Government
  • Some big future plans of DingsDums Dumplings, e.g. to conquer supermarkets
  • And of course heaps of more personal anecdotes & insights

Hope you’re ready for an episode that leaves you inspired & hungry for more! Now, without any further ado, get ready for Anna from DingsDums Dumplings

LITTLE SUN: CHANGING THE WORLD WITH SOLAR ART

Download & listen to the episode on iTunes | on Stitcher | on Youtube

„Everything is connected. We are living on the same planet all together - and we need to make it work" - Felix Hallwachs, Little Sun

After a little summer break we’re back with a brand new episode. And I'm 100% sure that it’s going to switch on your inner light and belief in the good people in this world! Claudi sat down with Felix Hallwachs, Managing Director of a beautiful social startup called Little Sun (@ilovelittlesun).

QUESTIONS TACKLED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • How can something so simple as a tiny sun-shaped solar lamp the impact the lives of millions of people ?
  • Why can micro-entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa be much more powerful than financial aid?
  • How can anyone of us leverage the connections we have to be part of something that matters?
  • And how can we keep up our flame of motivation when things get tough?

That’s just a mini-preview of all the inspiration bombs Felix drops in this episode.

Extremely proud to present you another Berlin-based certified B-Corp with a fascinating story. If you haven’t heard of it yet, Little Sun is a social business spreading clean, affordable solar energy around the globe.

THE IMPACT OF LITTLE SUN

Just a couple of mindblowing numbers to get you into the scene: Since Little Sun started in 2012, it has sold 661,578 lamps sold worldwide, changed 1,648,386 lives off-grid, built up new opportunities for 600+ African entrepreneurs, saved an insane amount of $35,531,865 on energy expenses in off-grid households and reduced 134,572 tonnes of Co2 emissions!

That was in December 2017, so their impact has been growing even bigger since. Little Sun has also won a competition by the United Nations Development Program for access to clean energy in Senegal, launched the Little Sun Foundation and - an image that can hardly be topped in beauty - brought together artists, musicians, and activists in New York in the eve of COP23 to urge policymakers and political leaders to join the fight for climate action. Imagine 2,800 people holding up Little Sun’s, creating a collective work of art that stands for a solar-powered sunrise….. Goosebumps!

We loved chatting to Felix - he has such a bright personality, is full of integrity, radiates genuine excitement for the opportunities we have & adds exactly the right dose of humour to things - which I find is SO important to really move the needle forward and tackle the big problems out there. Plus, he’s a loving dad and shares so many personal (and emotional) insights about his journey

Felix also mentions heaps of other great impact projects AND gives some big shout outs to you guys, the listeners - including a burning question that maybe some of you could help answer in the end. So make sure to listen carefully and check out the show notes.

***Just a quick moment to remind you that you can sign up to our newsletter to not miss any future episodes. Look forward to connecting!***

IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE, YOU'LL ALSO LEARN ABOUT:

  • How to leverage the contacts you already have to make an impact
  • The major issue that Little Sun is trying to tackle (UN SDG)
  • How the micro-entrepreneurship model of Little Sun works
  • Why access to energy should be a basic human right
  • The power of involving off-grid communities & understanding that we're all the same

LITTLE SUN - QUOTES FROM THE PODCAST 💚

„ We want to be positive! It’s not about what you cannot do, it’s about what we can do!

Maybe you've heard that Berlin is world-famous for its all-day breakfast and brunch scene. Are you wondering how eating your way through delicious and nutritious Berlin brunch buffets can actually have a positive impact on our planet?

If you love food as much as we do, listen up. This guide is here to help you find the best earth-friendly food places, inspire your taste buds and, above all, discover the most creative vegan brunch and breakfast spots Berlin has to offer.

Before we start: Make sure to check out our new VeganBerlin Guide 👇

VeganBerlin Guide - slider | GreenMe Berlin

VeganBerlin is a lovingly curated folding map with over 75 plant-based hotspots and 3 different routes waiting to be explored

In Berlin (and many other creative hubs around the world), going vegan has become a huge thing. If you follow the GreenMe events calendar, there are oh so many vegan events on all the time - be it vegan brunches or pop up dinners, vegan cheese workshops or vegan tours…

Many Berlin locals as well as people who visit this eco-hip boomtown from around the world already opt for 100% plant powers only on their plates. If you aren’t one of them (yet), don’t worry. This is going to be GreenMe style: fun and undogmatic. We clearly aren’t here to tell you to turn into a radical vegan tomorrow. Instead, we want to get you excited about all those delicious, healthy & colorful food options Berlin is spoiling us with.

Still, for those of you who wanna dive deeper, this guide also sheds some light on why choosing the vegan option on the menu - even just once in a while - is not only great for the planet, but has tons of other mind-blowing benefits.

***WARNING: Reading this vegan brunch guide could be life-changing 😉 ***

We show you how rewarding it can be to eat a little more consciously, unleashing the superpowers of plants, fruit and veggies and slowly skipping the meat and dairy, bite by bite. That alone has huge potential to make not only our planet, but also ourselves a whole lot healthier and happier. Everyone can make a difference - the best thing: we can start right now, right here, doing something we all love so much: eating amazing food.

Curious to see where Berlin’s coolest vegan entrepreneurs have set up shop? Then come on tour with us and visit creative vegan cafés, vegan ice cream makers, vegan food collectives, vegan fashion stores and heaps more. Check out our tours & explore Berlin’s vibrant vegan scene >>

BERLIN: A VEGAN PARADISE

When it comes to sustainable cutting-edge solutions Berlin is leading the way with oh so many inspirational and creative people and places not only in the world of food. Berlin has been named the world’s vegan capital by Happy Cow and Saveur Magazine (fun fact: our founder Claudi actually guided that journalist through Berlin's vegan scene back in 2015). And it’s pretty clear why: Europe’s first vegan supermarket chain Veganz, 50+ plant-based restaurants and cafés, vegan fashion stores or vegan cheese workshops, Berlin is buzzing with compassion and plant-based power!

Coming back to Berlin after a holiday abroad or a or trip to a different area of the country, most veggie enthusiasts will agree: Berlin is a paradise for vegans and the transition to a plant-based lifestyle so fun and easy here compared to other places. In the vegan food (and non-food) scene especially, Berlin is a place where a lot has started and continues to happen!

The vegan landscape of Berlin is being shaped by its enthusiastic people, such as the awesome crew of volunteers at Berlin-Vegan who organize open vegan gatherings twice a month and initiated Europe’s biggest vegan festival Veganes Sommerfest Berlin.

For a full dose of inspiration, listen to the GreenMe Podcast #10 “Thoughts of a Vegan Changemaker” and get introduced to some of Berlin’s wonderful vegan business owners, like Stefanie, the founder of the Green Market Berlin and Kaffee Ingwer

A big shout out to all the passionate people behind these cafés and restaurants, for sharing our vision and making Berlin (and the world) a better place with every plate served!

WHY VEGAN? THERE ARE SO MANY BENEFITS

Whether you want to help the environment, improve your overall health or demonstrate your compassion for animals - be amazed how breaking free from old habits can be a fantastic experience with lasting benefits! Does this mean you have to become vegan tomorrow? No, you don’t. But being aware of the benefits it has for you and the planet and reducing the days you eat meat would already be a huge help to start with.

A bit of science: A recent study shows us how big of an impact our diet has. The scientists behind it found that farming has the most damaging effects on our planet. Our world could change drastically if every person on this planet would adopt a vegan diet. Can you imagine farmland the size of the US, China, Australia and the EU combined would become available? The way our food is produced, consumed and wasted is everything else but sustainable if you look at it from the perspective of our planet. “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth [...] It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car” said the research’s leader Joseph Poore (University of Oxford).

Be open and courageous to try something new!

Here are our top five reasons why vegan food rocks:

#1 Saving the Planet

There have never been more humans living on this planet and a lot of humans eat a lot of meat, often and every day. Our population continues to explode and while it might not be realistic that every person living on this planet turns vegan overnight, it will be inevitable for everyone to lower the consumption of meat, dairy and eggs eventually. Imagine the positive impacts on the environment: we could use our resources more sustainably, preserve our biodiversity and actually fight climate change, of which mass-consuming animal products is a major driver.

#2 Compassion

By eating a plant-based diet you save the lives of animals. Pigs, cows, chickens, or fish: we cause suffering to all of them with our farming methods. Countless animals spend their short lives in factory farms only to become a meal for a person. If you choose a vegan diet you help to prevent animals from suffering in horrible conditions, and it is easier than ever with more and more alternatives to meat, eggs, and milks on supermarket shelves and an ever-growing and wide variety of vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants (especially here in Berlin!).

#3 Fighting Inequality

Hunger, water shortage, environmental disasters - the question of how we can feed the growing population of the world is super urgent. For a vegan diet much fewer resources are required. More plant eaters, especially in the western world, would help to create a more sustainable food supply for everyone. You can contribute to a fairer world by choosing compassion and a plant-based diet!

#4 Boost your Energy and Health

Did you know that a vegan diet can have many positive effects on your health? This, of course, strongly depends on the type of vegan diet! Eating fries or vegan burgers every day probably won’t make you fitter or lose weight. Yet, many top athletes of the world credit a boost of energy and performance to their vegan diet. If you wanna grow old and still be fit and agile in your later years of life, chances are better if your diet is veggie and wholesome. Plus, the right nutrition can prevent many modern lifestyle diseases like cancer, heart diseases and diabetes. Even more and more doctors promote plant-based over health-risky animal-based diets. The signs are all there... You choose what you do with them.

#5 Food from Nature is Diverse and Delicious

Most importantly: with the enormous variety of veggies on our planet and the growing number of plant-based foods, a vegan diet can be deeply satisfying and super delicious and tasty! Modern vegan food is colourful, creative and makes your taste buds celebrate. And surely, many quality restaurants, cafés and food businesses do their best to impress. Read (and eat) your way through the menues of the places recommended below and try not to get excited 🙂

See, there are lots of good reasons for eating more plant-based food: it combats global warming, world hunger, pollution, animal abuse, deforestation, mass extinction and poor health. Pretty impressive, right?

You’re still not so sure about the whole vegan thing or don’t know where to start? We highly recommend venturing out to one of Berlin’s abundant vegan breakfast places listed in this guide and indulge in their plant-based culinary delights. Whether you grab a group of friends, take your date for a scrumptious brunch on the weekend or enjoy an energizing pre-work breakfast - Berlin’s creative eateries surely make the hearts of many vegans (and even carnivores) skip a beat.

Get ready to indulge and find out where you can eat the best, most delicious, homemade vegan food in Berlin and take part in changing the world at the same time!

VEGAN BRUNCH IN BERLIN: BEST PLACES TO RELISH ON THE WEEKEND

Who would have thought that the most powerful thing we can do to help our planet - right now and with immediate effect - is to eat? Nothing easier than that! Note: The concept of ‘All you can eat’ can be taken to a whole new level when there's no cheese, dairy and heavy meat on the buffet 🙂

Here are our top choices to enjoy a scrumptious vegan brunch or breakfast in Berlin:

LÜCK’S (Friedrichshain)

Brothers David and Christian opened the small vegan restaurant LÜCK'S in January 2017, taking over from the former and infamous Laauma. The surrounding of this family-run place overlooking a small park is super relaxing and the whole atmosphere will make you not want to leave. How good sounds a Sunday afternoon spent here in the ‘Sunday district’ (= Sonntagskiez), a beautiful part of Friedrichshain?

Even though they offer delicious dinner options on their menu on other days of the week, you best mark every second and fourth weekend of the month, as they treat their guests to an amazing plant-based brunch buffet. Expect an array of sweet and savoury spreads, hot dishes, freshly baked bread, salads and yummy desserts.

P.S. If you want to go for a delightful delicious vegan dinner instead, you’ll find seasonal meals prepared with lots of love such as gnocchi or lasagna - or heavenly cakes to enjoy for dessert. Especially for the weekend brunch it’s always best to make a reservation in advance at this well-loved vegan favourite. And make sure to not miss out on the popular tofu scramble!

board’eau (Neukölln)

This cozy place is the perfect spot to spend a relaxed afternoon while enjoying high quality homemade vegan food. Entering the bord’eau, the friendly team makes you feel at home and welcome instantly. This hidden gem is built with lots of wood and passion. With a deep breath in and out you almost forget you’re in Berlin and not somewhere by the beach.

A group of surfers and travellers opened board’eau as a meeting point for board lovers and friends in Berlin to raise awareness for environmental pollution and water shortage. To all you surf fans: The collectives’ main project ‘Ride Morocco’ is a surf hostel north of Agadir that is to open soon.

Every Saturday and Sunday you can indulge in a completely plant-based buffet including all homemade dishes, a green smoothie or some heart- and belly-warming soup. We love their vegan breads - which, again, they’re making all by themselves - and sweet and savoury spreads as much as the variety of different salads. Definitely try the vegan chorizo! Sweet treats include a delicious banana bread and other cakes!

The best: If you crave some activity after eating, rent one of the longboards and cruise over the nearby Tempelhofer Feld, or check out their yoga classes and other fun events. Reserve via Facebook or phone to help the team at board’eau prepare. Extra tip: Follow them for updates on their vegan pop up dinners!

AtayaCaffe (Prenzlauer Berg)

Ataya is a Senegalese tea, however it’s a lot more than a drink: it’s a way of meeting and being together that can last several hours. AtayaCaffe Berlin was formed out of an encounter, a fusion of two lovers of two cultures, Italy and Africa, Elisabetta from Sardinia and Bachir from Senegal. At Ataya they celebrate the sun and the vitality of their native lands with their guests through great food and music. Ataya is also a way of saying thanks and paying homage to Berlin, which has allowed them to realise a dream.

You can eat breakfast and business lunch here every day except Mondays and enjoy breakfast all day long on Saturdays. Sunday is the day not to be missed! It’s when the special Afro-Italian all-you-can-eat brunch is served! Big plus, you can always bring the entire family to Ataya and everyone will feel at home. It’s warm and welcoming like a living room with a really nice children’s corner, where the little ones can pass the time with games, books and toys while you’re indulging in some wonderful tasting food. Spending precious time together in harmony is the gift the owners wish to give to their guests. We can ensure you that by visiting this hidden oasis of peace you will receive it!

Ataya is 100% vegan and also offers catering and can host your private events at their place.

Kopps (Mitte)

The doors of the vegan fine dining restaurant Kopps, established in 2011 by Ilhami Terzi, usually open in the evening. Except when the weekend comes around and with it everything you can dream of from an unlimited brunch buffet. The team at Kopps set up oh so many different and enticing delicacies for you to try and constantly replenish them all day on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s the ideal place for a group with both vegans and omnivores to try out how good vegan alternatives can be without political discussions or preachings. With opening a vegan fine dining restaurant, the owner was curious to try something new and future-oriented for the gastronomy scene and Berlin. We love to hear sustainable ventures like this paying off: Kopps receives praise all around and was even chosen one of the best vegan restaurants in the world by CNN!

A wide variety of vegan creations can be found on the buffet: Vegan cheeses, alternative meats and egg crumble, pancakes, vegetables, cakes, cereals and all in all an amazing selection of sweet and savoury items. And every brunch guest gets a fresh and homemade juice. Kopps is a classy and beautiful place with lovely interior perfect to be seduced into delicious and healthy vegan food of high quality. The price reflects the food and it is worth every cent - we’re absolutely sure you won’t be disappointed. As usual with popular weekend brunches, reservations are recommended.

Kék Ló (Kreuzberg)

A dream came true for Hungarian fashion designer Virag Toth when she opened her vegan café and upcycling fashion store Kék Ló (meaning blue horse) in Berlin following her ongoing success with the original concept bar of the same name in Budapest.

It feels like walking into a designer’s studio when you enter these cosy two rooms. The upcycling theme runs through the entire place giving the interior a very unique and original touch with lots of handmade and upcycled furniture and accessories. Compared to the usual hip-chic look one is used to in Berlin, Viraq’s unique place and idea to combine and connect fashion, food and entertainment is refreshingly relaxed - and just such a good idea! Everything here is made with passion and the people are very friendly and welcoming. Have a nice breakfast here in Kreuzberg’s beautiful Graefekiez with fruit drinks and freshly brewed coffee, or look out for the Saturdays with vegan brunch buffets (the next one is on the 14th July!) and enjoy many healthy and tasty vegan options, typical Hungarian treats like beetroot salad and pancakes and other tempting foods to fill your bellies with!

Doesn’t it sound cool that you can combine lovely homemade food with shopping for some cool upcycled clothes at this café-plus-store in one go? And there is even more at Kék Ló! You can attend events from upcycling fashion and food workshops, to art exhibitions and jazz concerts! Fun fact: The Kék Ló used to be a butcher’s shop over a hundred years ago - we love that it turned into a vegan café with an artistic atmosphere!

Pêle-Mêle (Neukölln)

In 2013, the charming lovely café with cultural program and co-working space called Pêle-Mêle - french for „a colourful mixture“ or oder „hodgepodge“ - opened its doors as a space and platform to exchange culinary and creative ideas in a cozy co-working environment. Besides mostly organic, fair trade and 100% vegan food you can enjoy readings, exhibitions and concerts here (Special: vegan dinner buffet with live music every first Friday of the month) !

A calm place in the middle of the noisy Neukölln Kiez near Sonnenallee, it might not be an area the place you’d first choose to go. Yes, it's not exactly in the center location-wise, but with super nice staff serving really delicious food in a super very welcoming atmosphere, Pêle-Mêle is definitely worth a visit - and only a short walking distance away from the vegan grocery store Dr. Pogo!

You’ll find as much culinary variety on their menu as all around this popular area of the city. From sweet to English you get different vegan breakfast options or you can create your own bagel, enjoy their creative soups, a ciabatta, burger or green juice and great coffee anytime! We recommend to take a few friends for the Pêle-Mêle Sunday brunch buffet with a lot of homemade and tasty stuff to feast until you can't eat no more: different salads, hot food, warming soups and scrambled tofu, mini-muffins, mini-quiche, breads and a lot of spreads and toppings, different vegan yoghurts, granola, fresh fruit, cakes and something new every week!

Reserve a table for the brunch for 10.00am-12.30pm or 12.30pm-3.00pm. And if you want to host a brunch or party: Pêle-Mêle offers catering, too!

Café Morgenrot (Prenzlauer Berg)

As an alternative vegan/vegetarian café, the Morgenrot is a collective with political orientation and meeting place for political activists. Alongside the usual restaurant business, they also host events and regular film screenings. From Friday to Sunday they offer a great all-you-can-eat buffet, spread with a concept to ensure their brunch is not a luxury event. They offer people to pay-what-you-can within a given range of 6-12€, according to their current financial situation . The Morgenrot crew is providing so many great options that no one will leave hungry and you’ll even be struggling to decide what to have. Favourites from the buffet include the tofu scramble, the amazing vegan cheese cream, and the chocolate cherry mousse. There are plenty of vegan options like beans, semolina, jam, bread and spreads.

If you like meeting people and are interested in discussions while enjoying yummy food in a friendly atmosphere, come to this comfy, warmly decorated café - you can easily spend hours at this place not interacting with anyone and playing board games, too 🙂

This can be quite a busy place. If you can make Friday or arrive early on the weekend chances are better that you get a table for the brunch. Table reservations can only be made for groups of 10 or more, best call them in advance to check availability.

For those of you who aren't so much into rich vegan brunch buffets, here are two of our favorite plant-based havens to escape and enjoy a smaller bite, creating your own version of vegan breakfast and lunch combined:

Haferkater (Prenzl'Berg, Friedrichshain, Mitte)

Haferkater holds a very special place in our hearts. Their concept is simple and just wonderfully refreshing! It’s so good to see their success story expand - to meanwhile three locations in Berlin (and even one in Cologne!) They specialize in traditional Scottish slow water-cooked porridge bowls containing everything you need for a healthy start in the day or giving you a boost of energy whenever you need it!

The freshly cooked porridge is based on oats, water and salt and served with various different toppings. Granola, fresh fruit, homemade compote, nuts or berries can be added to your individual taste - most vegan and some vegetarian (i.e. with yoghurt or goat cheese), including a savoury bowl. Depending on how hungry you feel you can order your bowl large or small. In addition to tea, smoothies and seriously good fantastic coffee and cakes, they have some other tasty, seasonal breakfast and lunch options.

The Haferkater in Prenzlauer Berg has great vibes with a larger inside seating area than at the original location in Friedrichshain, while the F'Hain has a slightly more relaxed environment. Don’t have time to sit down? Take the porridge to go (in eco-friendly packaging) if you’re on the way to work or need to catch a train from any of the three branches and enjoy!

Check out Haferkater on our map 1) in Prenzl'Berg > and 2) in Friedrichshain > and 3) in Mitte >
Opening hours vary between locations, but mostly Mo-Fri 7am-6pm, Sat & Sun from 8am

Jivamukti Canteen (Mitte)

Looking for 100% plant-based and healthy organic food for breakfast? Then we definitely recommend stopping by at the Jivamukti Canteen, a hidden little café in the heart of the Jivamukti Yoga Studio located in a typical Berlin 'Hinterhaus' (backyard house) in Mitte. It’s just perfect for a post-class hangout - recharge, enjoy the music in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and choose from a creative menu of fresh plant-based delights, cooked up with lots of soul and good karma.

The friendly staff prepare simple, nourishing, organic food such as daily soup, scrambled tofu sandwich or sweet treats such as the best banana bread ever right in front of your eyes and basically any time of the day! They also offer a wide variety of delicious drinks: excellent smoothies, fresh cold-pressed juices as well as hot beverages. If you’re in a rush, leave their cozy space with breakfast in one of their beautiful ‘JivaJars’ to go and take away drinks in the ‘Save The World Jar’ - both are reusable and come with small deposits. All other take-away material is free of plastic and compostable and zero-waste fans will love their cloth napkins! Another strong commitment and focus of theirs is educating their students not only in yoga, but also getting them excited about a vegan diet.

We love the their entire earth-friendly concept: eat, drink and save the world!
