IN SEARCH OF BERLIN’S GREEN CHRISTMAS MARKETS
We are 100% convinced: Santa loves going green! Isn’t Christmas after all a time to be humble and grateful and loving? So why does everyone stress so much about rushing out and buying as many useless, trashy items as possible? And the enormous lines on the return counter when everything is over… what a crazy world.
Thank god, the vibe in Berlin is a bit different - at least within our thriving Berlin Green Scene. Lots of independent stores, artist collectives and event organizers came up with their own ideas of how to make our Christmas shopping way more pleasant and filled with purpose.
Likewise, when it comes to unconventional Christmas events, this city definitely knows how to keep us in awe. You’ll find everything from bohemian nostalgia to unicorn wonderlands, redefining the usual X-Mas frenzy.
Reused spaces like park decks or former waste lands along the Spree are putting up glitter and candle lights, local creatives set up shop at quaint gothic church squares, transformed cold storage warehouses are heated up with love and mulled wine and the oldest corners of Berlin show us how to go all green and natural…
Did you actually know that there are more than 70 Christmas markets in Berlin? To help you navigate your way to those that are less about mass consumption and more about supporting your locals, we put together our take on the best Berlin Christmas markets 2019: The Green Edition !

The program has something in store for unicorns of all ages: From ice curling, listening to fairy tales, baking Christmas cookies, watching movies, jumping with the acrobats, dancing to live music, finding the coolest gifts, indulging in delicious treats and homemade Glühwein... Far from anything conventional - let’s get snug and merry, right by the river Spree.

If you don’t want to stand outside freezing but still enjoy a really unique Christmas market, head over to Kreuzberg’s Markthalle Neun as they turn their farmers market into a beautiful X-mas celebration each weekend throughout the Advent season. Not only can you stock up on fresh, organic fare for your Christmas feast directly from the friendly Brandenburg farmers. You can also roam the stands of some lovely young creators & small manufactures, all offering delightful gifts and handcrafted goods that last. And if that’s not reason enough, the Markthalle has prepared some other merry activities like neighborhood choirs, an advent calendar, a Christmas bakery for kids, a DIY packing station. Short: a warm & cozy wonderland. No plastic products, but natural goodness. Not to forget the delicious mulled wine. New this year: hire a Christmas tree!

Another famous indoor Christmas market, this one doesn’t have anything to do with horses and cowboys. Instead, the X-Mas Rodeo is dedicated to all those whose hearts beat for design, fashion, arts & DIY. Since 10 years, it provides a stage for more than 200 exhibitors, bringing together the coolest street art talents, upcoming designers, skilled graphic artists and innovative street food makers on six floors. All of them trading the most creative, thoughtful and - above all - beautiful goods that make unique and unconventional gifts for your loved ones (or yourself). On top, you’ll be entertained by creative DIY workshops, decent DJ sounds, colorful kids stuff and festive chill out oases. Everything is set at the stunning Kühlhaus Berlin, a huge 3500 qm brick wall building in urban Kreuzberg.

5. ALT-RIXDORF CHRISTMAS MARKET
Imagine yourself in a far away time, stepping through the snow and reaching a fanciful little square in an ancient bohemian village. Stalls lit by the warm light of gas lamps, kids building a snowman, the delicious smell of roasted chestnuts entering your nose… Well, at the quaint cobbled Richardplatz in Neukölln, this dreamy scene becomes pretty much reality. What used to be a village called Rixdorf is hard to beat in terms of setting for a nostalgic Christmas market. Even better: more than 100 charitable organizations and collectives come together to sell crafted treasures made from wood, wax or other raw materials. Rounded off by some local Rixdorf specialties like mulled wine, schnapps or liquors brewed after secret family recipes. Add pony rides and a blacksmith exhibition and you forget that you’re in one of the trendiest urban cities in Europe.
At a Glance
Hours: Fri 5-9pm, Sat 2-9pm, Sun 2-8pm
Location: Richardplatz 28, 12055 Berlin - Neukölln
