DINGSDUMS DUMPLINGS: BERLIN'S FRESHEST SOLUTION AGAINST FOOD WASTE

Download & listen to the episode on iTunes | on Stitcher | on Youtube

„We have to make it mainstream. Like there is no other way" - Anna Wohlrab, DingsDumsDumplings

The topic of food waste - or better anti food waste - has popped up a lot around us lately - and I’m so grateful that (apart from all the daunting numbers of how much food is being wasted) it mainly came up with a positive solution in tow.

Usually in the form of a dedicated group of people, who tackles this issue, without waiting until governments or the big players out there do something. They have an epiphany that there’s just too much food waste and we gotta do something about it!

That’s exactly what happened to today’s interview guest & her co-founders. And I’m so excited that we finally make this interview happen with Anna from DingsDums Dumplings (@dingsdumsdumplings)!

Saving food alone is great, but then there’s the question what to do with all these 5 million tons of edible food that us Germans throw away each year? How to turn them into something that’s tasty and extends its shelf life even further?

Together the three young founders, Jillian, Mauritz and Anna found a way to make it happen: As DingsDums Dumplings, they are creating super delicious dumplings from surplus food.

  • The moment that triggered the three to quit their jobs & to do something about food waste
  • How important it is to focus on the core thing: a strong product (that looks great, tastes delicious)
  • How to deal with non-believers in your environment - and proving them all wrong
  • One thing Anna is most proud of at the moment
  • Who or what inspired her most on her way
  • Her secrets to overcome challenges and always stay motivated
  • How Jilliane creates new recipes on the spot over and over again
  • How to be in for the long game
  • Why it’s important to surround yourself with the right people
  • The power of starting small & convincing the big players
  • The meaning of being awarded by the Federal Government
  • Some big future plans of DingsDums Dumplings, e.g. to conquer supermarkets
  • And of course heaps of more personal anecdotes & insights

Hope you’re ready for an episode that leaves you inspired & hungry for more! Now, without any further ado, get ready for Anna from DingsDums Dumplings

Our beloved Berlin is boiling with temperatures reaching record highs this summer! Most likely, you don’t have time to flee the city for a dip in a cooling lake each day. Worry not, we got the solution for joy and refreshment in this heated situation: Delicious vegan ice cream!

With the sun shining and everyone outside and in a good mood, we love everything about this long ice cream season. For you we got into the queues of Berlin’s inventive ice cream parlours to try and test especially their plant based varieties - quite a challenge considering all the new openings this season 🙂 Our food enthusiast Miri went out to taste her way through the vast choice, from fruity sorbets to creamy nut-based scoops. To make your decision easier, she wrote up this tempting top 5 guide.

More earth-friendly food spots are coming your way >>

We’re super excited to be collaborating with the fabulous Berta Berlin for a map including our favourite vegan hot spots in Berlin. You can already preorder the map here to receive it in autumn.

While we’re busy finishing it for you we won’t deprive you of five cool spots from the map to sweeten your hot summer days in Berlin - after work, on weekends or for taking a break from sightseeing on your travels: Ice cream shops are the perfect place to meet and hang out.

Enjoy ice “green”, help save the world!

We recently wrote about all the benefits that come with the cool vegan lifestyle in our huge Vegan Brunch Guide . Believe us, Berlin is the perfect place to give this vegan thing a try! Here, no one has to sacrifice, there are plenty of options for plant-based refreshments. Many ice cream makers make a change and include more fruit sorbets and soy-, almond-, rice- or coconut-based ice cream to their sortiment. But now, we won't let you wait any longer...

WHO'S MAKING THE BEST VEGAN ICE CREAM IN BERLIN?

Here is our verdict for the top 5 ice green spots in town:

Balaram (Friedrichshain)

Balaram Ice Cream | GreenMe Berlin

©Balaram Ice Cream

Check out the first ALL vegan ice cream shop of Berlin in the heart of Friedrichshain, right at the lively Boxhagener Platz - yes, even the waffles, toppings and whipped cream are vegan at Balaram!

Since 2016, Ferdinand and his friendly team offer specialities of the local vegan ice producer Eiskontor Berlin. With 18 regularly changing creative flavours like New York Cheesecake or Peanut Butter, the only downside here is that you have to make a choice: We recommend to try out a larger variety of flavours by opting for kid’s scoops and definitely pimp your choice in the „free-topping-area“ with sauces and crumbles. Beautiful colourful, creamy, delicious!

Tip: The same team also runs the amazing Goura Pakora - an all-vegan South Indian restaurant just around the corner. Swing by and taste some of the best Masala dosas and vegan mango lassis in town.

Check out all about Balaram >

Balaram | 100% vegan ice cream shop with lots of different varieties | Opening Hours: Mon-Thu: 12 - 10pm, Fri-Sat: 12 - 11pm, Sun: 12 - 10pm | Gabriel-Max-Str. 17, 10245 Berlin - Friedrichshain

Tribeca Ice Cream | GreenMe Berlin

Nestled in the picturesque Kollwitzkiez, not far from the famous Mauerpark in Prenzlauer Berg, there is another ALL vegan ice cream shop in Rykestraße that we absolutely love! Here, everything is made right in house. Inspired and back from New York, Frank and Klaus of Tribeca Ice Cream created a concept and a product that is good for your health and the planet: Only organic products are used, their entire range of ice cream is based on rice milk and coconut oil and all their homemade creations are without refined sugar and and free of soy or gluten!

The (n)ice guys proof that plant-based ice is so much more than fruit sorbet and offer some seriously innovative fillings for your Tribeca cones, bowls and sandwiches. You might want to stop here multiple times this summer to sample all their exciting and interesting flavours from raw-chocolate and maca-salty-caramel to banana-walnut ice cream! Our secret favorite is pistaccio-luccuma.

This place is a gem and we’re very curious about their plans for the future. The creamy tribeca vegan ice cream is also available in delicatessen shops or at various festivals, from their mobile ice cream counter.

Check out Tribeca on the map >

Tribeca Ice Cream | 100% vegan ice cream | gluten-free and soy-free | Opening Hours:
Mon-Sun 1:00pm-7:00pm | Rykestraße 40, 10405 Berlin - Prenzlauer Berg

Mos Eisley | GreenMe Berlin

The only thing making the beautiful sun set over Tempelhofer Feld in Neukölln even better is enjoying it with our favourite homemade ice cream from Mos Eisley in your hands. The small ice cream shop of Daniela Teuber, who learned her skills from the best at a Gelato University in Italy, is another destination where vegan ice cream dreams come true. Though not all vegan, you’ll always find a great variety of sorbets and weekly changing soy-based choices in their gelato cabinet at Herrfurthplatz!

Alongside the Italian classics and spins they serve up exceptional flavours you find nowhere else like Hazelnut-Soy, Apricot-Thyme or Cucumber-Tonic. Every day all their ice cream is made freshly for you with natural ingredients and lots of love: outstandingly delicious.

Note: Keep an eye out for Zwei Dicke Bären ice cream sandwiches: A combination of homemade cookies and ice cream made by Mos Eisley on offer at foodie events around Berlin like Street Food Thursday or Bite Cub!

Check out all about Mos Eisley >

Paletas Berlin | GreenMe Berlin

© Dinko Verzi

Paletas is a real diamond amongst the local ice makers. These Berlin manufacturers specializing in ice popsicles make their yummy paletas from whole fruits and fresh ingredients since summer 2012. Enjoy the paletas ice lolly happiness in many cafés throughout Berlin or in their own shop in Friedrichshain.

With lots of vegan varieties (fruit sorbets as well as flavors based on coconut) we promise you taste explosions of blueberry cheesecake, strawberry-lime, buttermilk-lemon, mango coconut, raspberry-vanilla. Topped with toppings!

Look out for their popsicles at all types of events, markets or concerts - such as the legendary Green Market Berlin - or invite them to cater your own summer party. Anywhere and anytime - Paletas is an “I scream, ice cream” experience!

DUO | Sicilian Ice Cream (Kreuzberg)

DUO Sicilian Ice Cream | GreenMe Berlin

Perfect to spend a sunny afternoon with ice cream and a really good Italian coffee in the middle of Berlin: the colorful Duo Sicilian Ice Cream parlour. Get excited about original Sicilian family ice recipes and coop sizes that don’t leave any wishes unfilled. This is ice cream exactly how it should taste. Thanks to the true talent and expertise of the owners you receive highest quality, amazing creamy consistency and no refined sugar or artificial flavor. If you’re someone who has a hard time to decide, then this is your place, as duo recommends you which two flavors go with each other best. Heaven!

Vegan (and non-vegan) hearts will be in love with the plant-based highlights on the menu (which makes up around 50% of all flavors) - which you can also turn into a divine milkshake: hazelnut, coconut, coffee, dark chocolate, nougat, pistachio, pineapple, raspberry, strawberry, and only here: avocado. They even got a sugar-free option! Big tasty plus: all the waffles are handmade and vegan. P.S. Coconut was to die for - you could taste its pure, natural ingredients like crunchy coconut chunks.

The location of Duo in the vibrant Kreuzberg area couldn’t be better. While there’s some serious ice cream making going on in the backroom, you can sit down and chill in their outdoor seating area, watch the iconic yellow Berlin metro ride by, or take your ice for a stroll around to the river Spree. We highly recommend you to visit this friendly family ice cream business and figure out your personal vegan ice-cream duo!

VeganBerlin is a lovingly curated folding map with over 75 plant-based hotspots and 3 different routes waiting to be explored

In Berlin (and many other creative hubs around the world), going vegan has become a huge thing. If you follow the GreenMe events calendar, there are oh so many vegan events on all the time - be it vegan brunches or pop up dinners, vegan cheese workshops or vegan tours…

Many Berlin locals as well as people who visit this eco-hip boomtown from around the world already opt for 100% plant powers only on their plates. If you aren’t one of them (yet), don’t worry. This is going to be GreenMe style: fun and undogmatic. We clearly aren’t here to tell you to turn into a radical vegan tomorrow. Instead, we want to get you excited about all those delicious, healthy & colorful food options Berlin is spoiling us with.

Still, for those of you who wanna dive deeper, this guide also sheds some light on why choosing the vegan option on the menu - even just once in a while - is not only great for the planet, but has tons of other mind-blowing benefits.

***WARNING: Reading this vegan brunch guide could be life-changing 😉 ***

We show you how rewarding it can be to eat a little more consciously, unleashing the superpowers of plants, fruit and veggies and slowly skipping the meat and dairy, bite by bite. That alone has huge potential to make not only our planet, but also ourselves a whole lot healthier and happier. Everyone can make a difference - the best thing: we can start right now, right here, doing something we all love so much: eating amazing food.

BERLIN: A VEGAN PARADISE

When it comes to sustainable cutting-edge solutions Berlin is leading the way with oh so many inspirational and creative people and places not only in the world of food. Berlin has been named the world’s vegan capital by Happy Cow and Saveur Magazine (fun fact: our founder Claudi actually guided that journalist through Berlin's vegan scene back in 2015). And it’s pretty clear why: Europe’s first vegan supermarket chain Veganz, 50+ plant-based restaurants and cafés, vegan fashion stores or vegan cheese workshops, Berlin is buzzing with compassion and plant-based power!

Coming back to Berlin after a holiday abroad or a or trip to a different area of the country, most veggie enthusiasts will agree: Berlin is a paradise for vegans and the transition to a plant-based lifestyle so fun and easy here compared to other places. In the vegan food (and non-food) scene especially, Berlin is a place where a lot has started and continues to happen!

The vegan landscape of Berlin is being shaped by its enthusiastic people, such as the awesome crew of volunteers at Berlin-Vegan who organize open vegan gatherings twice a month and initiated Europe’s biggest vegan festival Veganes Sommerfest Berlin.

For a full dose of inspiration, listen to the GreenMe Podcast #10 “Thoughts of a Vegan Changemaker” and get introduced to some of Berlin’s wonderful vegan business owners, like Stefanie, the founder of the Green Market Berlin and Kaffee Ingwer

A big shout out to all the passionate people behind these cafés and restaurants, for sharing our vision and making Berlin (and the world) a better place with every plate served!

WHY VEGAN? THERE ARE SO MANY BENEFITS

Whether you want to help the environment, improve your overall health or demonstrate your compassion for animals - be amazed how breaking free from old habits can be a fantastic experience with lasting benefits! Does this mean you have to become vegan tomorrow? No, you don’t. But being aware of the benefits it has for you and the planet and reducing the days you eat meat would already be a huge help to start with.

A bit of science: A recent study shows us how big of an impact our diet has. The scientists behind it found that farming has the most damaging effects on our planet. Our world could change drastically if every person on this planet would adopt a vegan diet. Can you imagine farmland the size of the US, China, Australia and the EU combined would become available? The way our food is produced, consumed and wasted is everything else but sustainable if you look at it from the perspective of our planet. “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth [...] It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car” said the research’s leader Joseph Poore (University of Oxford).

Be open and courageous to try something new!

Here are our top five reasons why vegan food rocks:

#1 Saving the Planet

There have never been more humans living on this planet and a lot of humans eat a lot of meat, often and every day. Our population continues to explode and while it might not be realistic that every person living on this planet turns vegan overnight, it will be inevitable for everyone to lower the consumption of meat, dairy and eggs eventually. Imagine the positive impacts on the environment: we could use our resources more sustainably, preserve our biodiversity and actually fight climate change, of which mass-consuming animal products is a major driver.

#2 Compassion

By eating a plant-based diet you save the lives of animals. Pigs, cows, chickens, or fish: we cause suffering to all of them with our farming methods. Countless animals spend their short lives in factory farms only to become a meal for a person. If you choose a vegan diet you help to prevent animals from suffering in horrible conditions, and it is easier than ever with more and more alternatives to meat, eggs, and milks on supermarket shelves and an ever-growing and wide variety of vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants (especially here in Berlin!).

#3 Fighting Inequality

Hunger, water shortage, environmental disasters - the question of how we can feed the growing population of the world is super urgent. For a vegan diet much fewer resources are required. More plant eaters, especially in the western world, would help to create a more sustainable food supply for everyone. You can contribute to a fairer world by choosing compassion and a plant-based diet!

#4 Boost your Energy and Health

Did you know that a vegan diet can have many positive effects on your health? This, of course, strongly depends on the type of vegan diet! Eating fries or vegan burgers every day probably won’t make you fitter or lose weight. Yet, many top athletes of the world credit a boost of energy and performance to their vegan diet. If you wanna grow old and still be fit and agile in your later years of life, chances are better if your diet is veggie and wholesome. Plus, the right nutrition can prevent many modern lifestyle diseases like cancer, heart diseases and diabetes. Even more and more doctors promote plant-based over health-risky animal-based diets. The signs are all there... You choose what you do with them.

#5 Food from Nature is Diverse and Delicious

Most importantly: with the enormous variety of veggies on our planet and the growing number of plant-based foods, a vegan diet can be deeply satisfying and super delicious and tasty! Modern vegan food is colourful, creative and makes your taste buds celebrate. And surely, many quality restaurants, cafés and food businesses do their best to impress. Read (and eat) your way through the menues of the places recommended below and try not to get excited 🙂

See, there are lots of good reasons for eating more plant-based food: it combats global warming, world hunger, pollution, animal abuse, deforestation, mass extinction and poor health. Pretty impressive, right?

You’re still not so sure about the whole vegan thing or don’t know where to start? We highly recommend venturing out to one of Berlin’s abundant vegan breakfast places listed in this guide and indulge in their plant-based culinary delights. Whether you grab a group of friends, take your date for a scrumptious brunch on the weekend or enjoy an energizing pre-work breakfast - Berlin’s creative eateries surely make the hearts of many vegans (and even carnivores) skip a beat.

Get ready to indulge and find out where you can eat the best, most delicious, homemade vegan food in Berlin and take part in changing the world at the same time!

VEGAN BRUNCH IN BERLIN: BEST PLACES TO RELISH ON THE WEEKEND

Who would have thought that the most powerful thing we can do to help our planet - right now and with immediate effect - is to eat? Nothing easier than that! Note: The concept of ‘All you can eat’ can be taken to a whole new level when there's no cheese, dairy and heavy meat on the buffet 🙂

Here are our top choices to enjoy a scrumptious vegan brunch or breakfast in Berlin:

LÜCK’S (Friedrichshain)

Brothers David and Christian opened the small vegan restaurant LÜCK'S in January 2017, taking over from the former and infamous Laauma. The surrounding of this family-run place overlooking a small park is super relaxing and the whole atmosphere will make you not want to leave. How good sounds a Sunday afternoon spent here in the ‘Sunday district’ (= Sonntagskiez), a beautiful part of Friedrichshain?

Even though they offer delicious dinner options on their menu on other days of the week, you best mark every second and fourth weekend of the month, as they treat their guests to an amazing plant-based brunch buffet. Expect an array of sweet and savoury spreads, hot dishes, freshly baked bread, salads and yummy desserts.

P.S. If you want to go for a delightful delicious vegan dinner instead, you’ll find seasonal meals prepared with lots of love such as gnocchi or lasagna - or heavenly cakes to enjoy for dessert. Especially for the weekend brunch it’s always best to make a reservation in advance at this well-loved vegan favourite. And make sure to not miss out on the popular tofu scramble!

board’eau (Neukölln)

This cozy place is the perfect spot to spend a relaxed afternoon while enjoying high quality homemade vegan food. Entering the bord’eau, the friendly team makes you feel at home and welcome instantly. This hidden gem is built with lots of wood and passion. With a deep breath in and out you almost forget you’re in Berlin and not somewhere by the beach.

A group of surfers and travellers opened board’eau as a meeting point for board lovers and friends in Berlin to raise awareness for environmental pollution and water shortage. To all you surf fans: The collectives’ main project ‘Ride Morocco’ is a surf hostel north of Agadir that is to open soon.

Every Saturday and Sunday you can indulge in a completely plant-based buffet including all homemade dishes, a green smoothie or some heart- and belly-warming soup. We love their vegan breads - which, again, they’re making all by themselves - and sweet and savoury spreads as much as the variety of different salads. Definitely try the vegan chorizo! Sweet treats include a delicious banana bread and other cakes!

The best: If you crave some activity after eating, rent one of the longboards and cruise over the nearby Tempelhofer Feld, or check out their yoga classes and other fun events. Reserve via Facebook or phone to help the team at board’eau prepare. Extra tip: Follow them for updates on their vegan pop up dinners!

AtayaCaffe (Prenzlauer Berg)

Ataya is a Senegalese tea, however it’s a lot more than a drink: it’s a way of meeting and being together that can last several hours. AtayaCaffe Berlin was formed out of an encounter, a fusion of two lovers of two cultures, Italy and Africa, Elisabetta from Sardinia and Bachir from Senegal. At Ataya they celebrate the sun and the vitality of their native lands with their guests through great food and music. Ataya is also a way of saying thanks and paying homage to Berlin, which has allowed them to realise a dream.

You can eat breakfast and business lunch here every day except Mondays and enjoy breakfast all day long on Saturdays. Sunday is the day not to be missed! Kopps (Mitte)

The doors of the vegan fine dining restaurant Kopps, established in 2011 by Ilhami Terzi, usually open in the evening. Except when the weekend comes around and with it everything you can dream of from an unlimited brunch buffet. The team at Kopps set up oh so many different and enticing delicacies for you to try and constantly replenish them all day on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s the ideal place for a group with both vegans and omnivores to try out how good vegan alternatives can be without political discussions or preachings. With opening a vegan fine dining restaurant, the owner was curious to try something new and future-oriented for the gastronomy scene and Berlin. We love to hear sustainable ventures like this paying off: Kopps receives praise all around and was even chosen one of the best vegan restaurants in the world by CNN!

A wide variety of vegan creations can be found on the buffet: Vegan cheeses, alternative meats and egg crumble, pancakes, vegetables, cakes, cereals and all in all an amazing selection of sweet and savoury items. And every brunch guest gets a fresh and homemade juice. Kopps is a classy and beautiful place with lovely interior perfect to be seduced into delicious and healthy vegan food of high quality. The price reflects the food and it is worth every cent - we’re absolutely sure you won’t be disappointed. As usual with popular weekend brunches, reservations are recommended.

Kék Ló (Kreuzberg)

A dream came true for Hungarian fashion designer Virag Toth when she opened her vegan café and upcycling fashion store Kék Ló (meaning blue horse) in Berlin following her ongoing success with the original concept bar of the same name in Budapest.

It feels like walking into a designer’s studio when you enter these cosy two rooms. The upcycling theme runs through the entire place giving the interior a very unique and original touch with lots of handmade and upcycled furniture and accessories. Compared to the usual hip-chic look one is used to in Berlin, Viraq’s unique place and idea to combine and connect fashion, food and entertainment is refreshingly relaxed - and just such a good idea! Everything here is made with passion and the people are very friendly and welcoming. Have a nice breakfast here in Kreuzberg’s beautiful Graefekiez with fruit drinks and freshly brewed coffee, or look out for the Saturdays with vegan brunch buffets (the next one is on the 14th July!) and enjoy many healthy and tasty vegan options, typical Hungarian treats like beetroot salad and pancakes and other tempting foods to fill your bellies with!

Doesn’t it sound cool that you can combine lovely homemade food with shopping for some cool upcycled clothes at this café-plus-store in one go? And there is even more at Kék Ló! You can attend events from upcycling fashion and food workshops, to art exhibitions and jazz concerts! Fun fact: The Kék Ló used to be a butcher’s shop over a hundred years ago - we love that it turned into a vegan café with an artistic atmosphere!

Pêle-Mêle (Neukölln)

In 2013, the charming lovely café with cultural program and co-working space called Pêle-Mêle - french for „a colourful mixture“ or oder „hodgepodge“ - opened its doors as a space and platform to exchange culinary and creative ideas in a cozy co-working environment. Besides mostly organic, fair trade and 100% vegan food you can enjoy readings, exhibitions and concerts here (Special: vegan dinner buffet with live music every first Friday of the month) !

A calm place in the middle of the noisy Neukölln Kiez near Sonnenallee, it might not be an area the place you’d first choose to go. Yes, it's not exactly in the center location-wise, but with super nice staff serving really delicious food in a super very welcoming atmosphere, Pêle-Mêle is definitely worth a visit - and only a short walking distance away from the vegan grocery store Dr. Pogo!

You’ll find as much culinary variety on their menu as all around this popular area of the city. From sweet to English you get different vegan breakfast options or you can create your own bagel, enjoy their creative soups, a ciabatta, burger or green juice and great coffee anytime! We recommend to take a few friends for the Pêle-Mêle Sunday brunch buffet with a lot of homemade and tasty stuff to feast until you can't eat no more: different salads, hot food, warming soups and scrambled tofu, mini-muffins, mini-quiche, breads and a lot of spreads and toppings, different vegan yoghurts, granola, fresh fruit, cakes and something new every week!

Reserve a table for the brunch for 10.00am-12.30pm or 12.30pm-3.00pm. And if you want to host a brunch or party: Pêle-Mêle offers catering, too!

Café Morgenrot (Prenzlauer Berg)

As an alternative vegan/vegetarian café, the Morgenrot is a collective with political orientation and meeting place for political activists. Alongside the usual restaurant business, they also host events and regular film screenings. From Friday to Sunday they offer a great all-you-can-eat buffet, spread with a concept to ensure their brunch is not a luxury event. They offer people to pay-what-you-can within a given range of 6-12€, according to their current financial situation . The Morgenrot crew is providing so many great options that no one will leave hungry and you’ll even be struggling to decide what to have. Favourites from the buffet include the tofu scramble, the amazing vegan cheese cream, and the chocolate cherry mousse. There are plenty of vegan options like beans, semolina, jam, bread and spreads.

If you like meeting people and are interested in discussions while enjoying yummy food in a friendly atmosphere, come to this comfy, warmly decorated café - you can easily spend hours at this place not interacting with anyone and playing board games, too 🙂

This can be quite a busy place. If you can make Friday or arrive early on the weekend chances are better that you get a table for the brunch. Table reservations can only be made for groups of 10 or more, best call them in advance to check availability.

For those of you who aren't so much into rich vegan brunch buffets, here are two of our favorite plant-based havens to escape and enjoy a smaller bite, creating your own version of vegan breakfast and lunch combined:

Haferkater (Prenzl'Berg, Friedrichshain, Mitte)

Haferkater holds a very special place in our hearts. Their concept is simple and just wonderfully refreshing! It’s so good to see their success story expand - to meanwhile three locations in Berlin (and even one in Cologne!) They specialize in traditional Scottish slow water-cooked porridge bowls containing everything you need for a healthy start in the day or giving you a boost of energy whenever you need it!

The freshly cooked porridge is based on oats, water and salt and served with various different toppings. Granola, fresh fruit, homemade compote, nuts or berries can be added to your individual taste - most vegan and some vegetarian (i.e. with yoghurt or goat cheese), including a savoury bowl. Depending on how hungry you feel you can order your bowl large or small. In addition to tea, smoothies and seriously good fantastic coffee and cakes, they have some other tasty, seasonal breakfast and lunch options.

The Haferkater in Prenzlauer Berg has great vibes with a larger inside seating area than at the original location in Friedrichshain, while the F'Hain has a slightly more relaxed environment. Don’t have time to sit down? Take the porridge to go (in eco-friendly packaging) if you’re on the way to work or need to catch a train from any of the three branches and enjoy!

Check out Haferkater on our map 1) in Prenzl'Berg > and 2) in Friedrichshain > and 3) in Mitte >
Opening hours vary between locations, but mostly Mo-Fri 7am-6pm, Sat & Sun from 8am

Jivamukti Canteen (Mitte)

Looking for 100% plant-based and healthy organic food for breakfast? Then we definitely recommend stopping by at the Jivamukti Canteen, a hidden little café in the heart of the Jivamukti Yoga Studio located in a typical Berlin 'Hinterhaus' (backyard house) in Mitte. It’s just perfect for a post-class hangout - recharge, enjoy the music in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and choose from a creative menu of fresh plant-based delights, cooked up with lots of soul and good karma.

The friendly staff prepare simple, nourishing, organic food such as daily soup, scrambled tofu sandwich or sweet treats such as the best banana bread ever right in front of your eyes and basically any time of the day! They also offer a wide variety of delicious drinks: excellent smoothies, fresh cold-pressed juices as well as hot beverages. If you’re in a rush, leave their cozy space with breakfast in one of their beautiful ‘JivaJars’ to go and take away drinks in the ‘Save The World Jar’ - both are reusable and come with small deposits. All other take-away material is free of plastic and compostable and zero-waste fans will love their cloth napkins! Another strong commitment and focus of theirs is educating their students not only in yoga, but also getting them excited about a vegan diet.

We love the their entire earth-friendly concept: eat, drink and save the world!

SIRPLUS: THE JOURNEY OF THE MAN WHO LIVED WITHOUT MONEY

Download & listen to the episode on iTunes | on Stitcher | on Youtube

Making up for the long wait for a new episode, Claudi has an absolute killer interview guest for you.

To many of you, especially those German-speakers and those who've been following the anti-food waste movement, I probably don’t have to introduce him: He is one of Germany’s biggest food activists, he went on a money strike, he’s written a book called “Happy Without Money”, given tons of talks, co-founded the platform foodsharing.de - and now founded an amazing new startup, Germany’s first food outlet called SirPlus.

YES, you are right - I'm talking about Raphael Fellmer (@sirplus.de).

Raphael and I met in November 2017 at the "re:MIND" conference that brought together around 100 influencers who care about sustainability, to discuss what sustainability actually means and how it could possibly work in big multinational companies...

Raphael gave a super inspiring talk, loaded with passion, emotion, gratitude and just so authentic and powerful… I think everyone was totally captured. He is someone I truly admire for his values, his beliefs and his perseverance. If everyone would be a little bit more like him, we could solve a lot of our world’s problems in no time.

WHY WE NEED SIRPLUS?

Raphael and his team are putting heaps of passion into SirPlus - and that’s really really necessary when we look at the numbers: 50% of edible food is being wasted in Europe! 50% !! In Germany, that's about 1 truck per minute - and with the food that's thrown away, we could feed all hungry people 4 times !!

Sounds daunting, but Raphael Fellmer is the living proof that change is possible and everyone everywhere can do something. Want some positive numbers?

Within their first 7 months, SirPlus managed to save more than 400 tons of food from landing in the bin - that equals 1,000,000 meals! That’s huge! Meanwhile, they already opened their 4th outpost and the amount of food that's been saved surely has quadrupled, too.

IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

  • the story of Raphael’s 5-year moneystrike & a moneyless journey through Mexico
  • what happened that led him to such a radical experiment
  • the realization that there are two sides to money & other big learnings
  • why he believes so strongly in our generation
  • why overwriting what we learned can sometimes take a while
  • the what’s, how’s & why’s of SirPlus
  • empowering people to be the change they want to see in the world (like Ghandi said)
  • the darks side and bright side in every human being
  • the blessing of failure & how to grow from it
  • why dogma entitlement & need to be replaced with compassion and empathy
  • deep trust as a force for good

...and tons of more beautiful take aways. Promise, this episode will fire you up with energy & once you finished listening you gonna jump up and make change happen.

Get ready for Raphael Fellmer from SirPlus!

EDIBLE ALCHEMY: THE INCREDIBLE POWER OF FEARLESS FERMENTATION

Download & listen to the episode on iTunes | on Stitcher | on Youtube

"You have to be careful not to push your perspectives on other people that just don’t know... Sustainability shouldn't be a guilt trip. It should be a lifestyle and a decison" -- Alexis Goertz, co-founder Edible Alchemy

For this final episode in 2017, Claudi visited the wonderful Alexis Goertz, co-founder of the Edible Alchemy CoLaboratory (@ediblealchemy.co), co-founder of Mother Kombucha and quite a lot more. She is Berlin’s queen of fermentation, a self-proclaimed probiotic warrior and without a doubt one of the most energetic, positive, bubbly an charismatic women I know. If she’s not in Berlin she’s traveling through the lands with the Microbial Circus, she’s an avid adventurer, a culture dealer, bacteria barista and, and, and...

Apart from having the nicest participants on our green Berlin tours, it also warms our hearts when we think about how amazing our partners are. They’re so welcoming and giving - and also incredibly spontaneous when I sometimes call a few hours before, “hey can we come by at your atelier with 15 people”? And they’re like “yeah sure, come by”.

One these amazing partners - and meanwhile also good friends - is Alexis from Edible Alchemy. I had THE BEST time recording this interview with her. I could have chatted for hours and hours because what she does - and especially how she does it - is purely fascinating.

SOME QUICK FACTS ABOUT EDIBLE ALCHEMY

Through her platform Edible Alchemy, Alexis and her co-founder Natalie share tons of value-packed content about healthy lifestyles, food skills and creative experimentation through fermentation.

And fermentation has so many superpowers. But we’re not just talking about our health, it can also play a huge role in preventing food waste and even has the potential to eliminate hunger and disease.

Unfortunately, like with so many truly incredible healing forces of mother nature, our Western culture has become largely out of touch with our microbial world. Instead we tend towards processed, packaged, pasteurized and fast food.

So thank god Alexis is here to guide us back to the sustainable secrets of fermentation, through colorful events, free webinars, lots of great content on the website - and, most importantly, super fun, interactive, hands-on fermentation workshops.

Really guys, the whole story is absolutely capturing me. It’s a tale of adventure, braveness, travels, immersing with different cultures, empowerment through teaching - and, of course, eating the most delicious foods.

IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

  • The secret forces of our brain-gut-connection
  • Why fermentation can be a cutting edge tool for chefs and restaurant owners
  • The beauty of creating a passion business that’s kicked off by demand
  • The strong ties between our human cultures and fermented foods
  • A life changing year in Mozambique
  • Why teaching always empowers both the student and the teacher
  • Why times have never been better to start with fermentation
  • The importance of understanding other peoples’ position (put everything into perspective)
  • Why fermentation can be a hugely beneficial technique for developing countries
  • What are Maheo, Shambuku, Zobkis and Scobys
  • The secrets behind the pickled mangos in Kathmandu
  • The potential of survival in remote places through preservation of nutrients
  • Why it’s so important to have a good microbiome (and how to get to this stage)
  • The moment when Alexis knew that Berlin was ready for Edible Alchemy
  • What makes Berlin’s food culture so intriguing for fermenters
  • Why it’s so useful to meet and exchange with your competitors
  • The mystics behind food expiry dates
  • The biggest struggles in finding a kombucha brewery
  • The power we have to prevent food waste within our own neighborhoods
  • What makes the Edible Alchemy events & workshops so unique
  • What’s Alexis’ longterm plan

And much, much more! Okay, you see there’s so much to take out of this interview, so let's not waste time and dive right in, shall we?

For this juicy episode, Claudi ventured out to meet Martin Elwert, co-founder of Coffee Circle (@coffee_circle), who are a certified B-Corp. If you’re not sure what a B-Corp is, there’s a cool video explaining the whole concept down in the shownotes.

SOME QUICK FACTS ABOUT COFFEE CIRCLE

Coffee Circle is all about high quality, single origin, organic coffee sourced directly from the highlands in Ethiopia - and meanwhile also from lesser known coffee nations like Laos or Myanmar. They follow strict principles and pay the farmers prices far above the world marke. And they invest 1 Euro per kg of coffee into social projects in the growing regions, with 100% of all donations going into the projects.

So far, Coffee Circle had a positive impact on more than 39.000 people in the growing regions, raising 500.000 euros for their projects. They’re really transparent about this, you can read about each single project on their website. And they deeply believe in entrepreneurship as the driving force for development, which is also a key focus of our interview.

The green coffee is then shipped to Germany and roasted fresh here in their new roastery in Wedding, which is where we are right now. I tell ya, it smells damn good. The wild Wedding is definitely one of Berlin’s most contrasting and therefore also most exciting neighborhoods. I love to come up here. It’s much rougher than other neighborhoods - but it’s home to a nicely down down-to-earth artist & alternative scene. Perfect for roamers and explorers seeking for an authentic, pre-gentrified vibe, a bit more off the beaten path than Kreuzberg & co.

Not only is coffee sth that many people in the world drink… It’s also one of the commodities that created the biggest imbalance between the wealthy nations and the developing world, AND at the same time coffee is without a doubt one of the most famous and widely spread Fair Trade products in the world. So it’s a great idea to build a social business around that and magnify its possibilities to alleviate poverty. Which is exactly what Coffee Circle is doing.

WHAT IS SOCIAL BUSINESS?

It’s a business that is dedicating its entire purpose to solve a social problem. It’s not about profit, money is just the means to drive the business and its mission forward. It’s also often defined as new way of conscious capitalism. What excites me about it, is that it really has the power to address the most pressing problems of humanity, without being dependent on donations or fundraising. Now there’s lots of different models and definitions out there. I highly recommend reading “Building Social Business” by Muhammad Yunus, who is kind of a luminary in this field. He’s founded the Grameen Bank, a bank run exclusively for and by the poor.… even though you may not agree with 100% everything - if you wanna learn more about the idea of Social Business, then check it out in the shownotes.

As for Coffee Circle, the impact these guys had within the last 7 years has been remarkable. One of the key take aways from our chat was, that if you are running a sustainably-oriented business that serves a social purpose, you have to be not only as good as conventional businesses - you have to be better.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL ALSO LEARN ABOUT:

  • Some major traits that all social entrepreneurs should have
  • The power of travel in boosting your confidence to change the world
  • How to have the greatest impact per euro invested
  • The crucial difference between social business and NGO's
  • The notion of dignity in social business
  • The challenge of building trust and credibility - and how to solve it
  • Why Coffee Circle decided deliberately against Fair Trade
  • Where to find the biggest potential for future social entrepreneurs
  • What exactly is the idea behind 3rd wave coffee (and what’s 1st and 2nd wave)
  • Which role Berlin played in kicking Coffee Circle off the ground
  • How the startup scene in Berlin is shifting
  • Why it’s so important to get expectations right
  • The biggest crisis Coffee Circle had to face last year
  • The importance of being humble & appreciative of the people around you

And so much more! Okay guys, you see there’s a hell of a lot to take away here, so let's not hold back any longer. Without any further delay: time to get into the show NOW!

// THE GREEN MARKET BERLIN: THOUGHTS OF A VEGAN CHANGE MAKER

This is a very special day - why? Because we are at episode NO 10 of the GreenMe Berlin podcast, yeah! For some it may sound little, but for me it’s a real milestone. I had no idea if I could do this, if I could keep it up, if anyone would listen at all. Especially cause I’m only doing one episode per month - but man, it’s at nearly 2500 downloads now.

Now what’s happening on todays’ show? Well, what would be more fitting to celebrate this special episode than getting the organizer of a very, very unique event in Berlin in front of the mic? It’s Stefanie from the Green Market Berlin!

The Green Market is Berlin's first and no. 1 green lifestyle market. It’s running 4 times a year, one for each season and this time, it moves to a brand new location (which we gonna tell you more about in a bit). Usually, the event draws in around 3000 people per day (which could rise quite a lot this year). There'll be around 60 vendors: a whole world full of original vegan street food, fashion, cosmetics, crafts, creative gifts, music, live presentations, workshops, cooking shows, film screenings and so much more. Promise, there’s no activism, no preaching - just heaps of flavor explosions, beautiful products and positive people.

I’m so excited to have the hero behind it all on the show today. Stefanie Witt, a super energetic Berliner. With a big portion of passion, she built up an incredible platform for the Berlin green scene. She’s bringing together consumers with small scale producers, so we can all learn and grow. We talked about heaps of exciting things...

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN MORE ABOUT:

  • What’s new for the summer market & why Steffi is taking a big risk with that
  • Why you need to choose your words wisely to get people excited for vegan products
  • Some books and films you should definitely watch to learn about food and our planet
  • Why she says no to big brands and helps small businesses instead
  • How to stay cool in a crisis moment & why you sometimes just need to take the risk
  • Why Berlin is a vegan paradise
  • Why there’s always a way, even if others tell you it won’t work
  • A special announcement on what’s next (apart from the Green Market)

Now, enough with all the pre-talk! Time to finally introduce you to Stefanie and the Green Market Berlin - here we go, let’s start the show...

// CONFLICTFOOD: CULTIVATING PEACE THROUGH ONE SINGLE INGREDIENT

It's bloody cold outside, but when I think about the dedicated social entrepreneur duo that I’m introducing you to today, my heart is instantly getting much warmer. I cannot wait to share the story of Conflictfood with you.

Their approach is so unique: through one single ingredient that is grown in a global crisis region, that they are opening our eyes for a different story about countries like Afghanistan or Palestine. One that the media don’t tell.

This morning, I actually listened to an audiobook, called the Book of Joy. It’s written by the Dalai Lama and the South African arch bishop Desmond Tutu. They talked about how the media only tell what is unusual. The fact that most people in the world are generous and kind and good, it’s nothing unusual. It is the norm. But that would be too boring to write about. So of course, the only thing that we see in the media are stories about terror, and the tiny part of humanity that is doing bad.

Related to that, today's interview with Conflictfood really touched me - it deeply links to what I believe in, as they show us another side of the world. Tell us positive stories of joy and lust for life.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

  • How to start a social startup without any entrepreneurial background
  • Why our consumption is always a political act & how to make it a good one
  • How a group of Afghan women are stepping up for independence
  • How kids from Kabul set a statement against opium & other drugs through street sports
  • Stories of kindness & hospitality from people who have nothing
  • How to find unique ingredients in a crisis region & give small-scale farmers a perspective
  • The bizarreness of producing burkas in China
  • Why superfoods aren’t always the best decision for the country of origin
  • The state of the social startup scene in Berlin - a testing lab for ideas for change
  • Afghanistan, Palestine - which region comes next?

And I’m not gonna let you wait any longer, here are Salem and Gernot from Conflictfood!

// FINAL WORDS:

I’m still blown away by all of this - it is SO beautiful to see how open-minded, positive-thinking people are putting all their heart and energy into a project that makes a difference out there. I don’t know about you, but I could just feel this drive and passion of Salem and Gernot, and this deeply rooted feeling that we can all do our parts.

I have taken away so much from these two and hope that you did too. If you want to support them, get in touch with them, or with me. And the easiest thing to do so is a) to buy their products and b) even easier, to share this episode out with your friends and anyone you think should know about this, too.

Now it’s time to call it a wrap. As always, you’d make me super happy if you subscribe to the podcast and leave me a little review on iTunes. It helps me to keep going and would just be a wonderful support from your side. Thanks soooo much.

Oh, one more news from my side: if you’re in Berlin on the 29th April, I’m doing a green tour through my home Kiez, South Neukölln, where I wanna show you the amazing eco-minded projects that this area is really filled with. We’ll say hi and chat to the founders of some creative sustainable food concepts, ethical fashion stores and transformed spaces. And get an insight into their work and why they do it. So if you’re in town, I’d be really happy if you join. It’ll take around 3-3.5hours and costs 25 euros. Spots are limited, cause I think it’s much better in a small group. And you can find all the info and tickets here on the Facebook event page.

Last shout out, promise: if you wanna stay up to date with the latest interviews, green events and fresh content from me and my explorations around going green in Berlin, then sign up for my monthly newsletter. I got a little thank you if you do so, I’ll send you a best-of guide to 7 of my favorite eco-minded places in the city. To get it, just go over to greenmeberlin.com/newsletter

That's it, have an amazing day, full of inspiration and power & remember to keep it green!

Hey fellow Berlin enthusiast, welcome to session no. 7 of the GMB Podcast.

I'm really excited about introducing today’s guest on the podcast: Leo from MealSaver.

MealSaver is a Berlin-based startup that is passionate about stopping food waste in the gastronomy world. How they do that? With an app that helps food businesses to sell their leftovers & helps us to get a tasty meal for very little money - win, win!

I tell you, from the small bakery around the corner to big hotel chains… the amounts of food that are going to waste every single day are mind boggling.

MealSaver only launched in October last year, but what they’ve built up since then is simply amazing. And Leo was such a great person to talk to - he spent time researching about food waste at the uni in Berkely, California & also got the chance to get a taster of the startup community in Silicon Valley.

Make sure to listen up to the end, as Leo made such an AMAZING call out to the world, to you and to everyone who wants to help us changing sth for the better…

But now, without further babbling around - time to get into the show...

For this festive episode, Claudi visited Julian Lechner who is the founder and inventor of Kaffeeform - a Berlin backyard startup that is producing reusable coffee cups from recycled coffee grounds. The idea and the story behind it is so brilliant and unique that Kaffeeform is getting a lot of attention and requests from all over the world, from Oslo to Korea.

Julian started his business Berlin style: Without money, from a garage, pretty DIY - but with a big portion of passion and belief in his idea. He gave me a tour of the Kaffeeform headquarters in a Kreuzberg backyard and showed me how the production works.

And how it works is so simple, yet fascinating: he goes around some local Kreuzberg coffee shops, collects their coffee waste, then dries it in little ovens, vacuum-seals it, sends it down to Southern Germany where the it gets molded with organic bio-polymers - no plastic, no toxics, no waste.

The result is one-of-a-kind: a beautiful, chocolate brown cup which is reusable and pretty much break proof. That’s what it means to go zero-waste, that’s what lies ahead of us.

I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy this episode. If you love coffee - this is a whole new level. And if not, I promise you’ll still be inspired and get lots of good stuff out of it!
