Do you know where your clothes come from and how they're being made? I’d say: It's time for a fashion revolution!

A couple of weeks ago, the 4th Fashion Revolution Week shook through the fashion industry around the world. It’s a series of global events that gives a voice to those working at the bottom of the fashion production chain.

A growing movement with a pretty serious background: on the 24th April 2013, the Rana Plaza (housing several textile factories) in Bangladesh collapsed and buried many people... This tragedy made consumers around the world wonder who makes their clothes - and under what conditions.

Back to the encouraging facts: People in more than 68 countries organized and joined events, workshops, flash mobs and a worldwide selfie campaign, asking producers and brands: “Who Made My Clothes?!”

Good question, right? After joining some of the many amazing events that the Fash Rev Germany team put on here in Berlin, I thought it’s time to share a few thoughts on why it matters to know where our clothes come from.

A FASHION REVOLUTION IS HAPPENING IN BERLIN

Without a doubt: Berlin is a mecca for ethical fashion and keeps drawing in sustainable clothing designers and creatives from all over the world. There is a well connected scene and large scale events like the Ethical Fashion Show are getting more and more attention every year…

No wonder that it also is the epicenter of Fashion Revolution Germany. This year, the team took up residency at the beautiful space of Agora Rollberg in Neukölln. Plus, there were a number of side events throughout the city, e.g. by organic fashion store Supermarché in Kreuzberg and other actors of the Berlin ethical fashion scene.

I stopped by at the opening event at Agora - and experienced so much good energy & readiness for change! The launch of FEMNET e.V.'s beautiful Fair Fashion Guide was followed by an interesting panel with the creative minds behind ARMEDANGELS, Ethical Fashion Show Berlin, Viertel Vor & more…

Anyone could swing by and learn more about why fair fashion makes such a difference and meet lots of passionate experts, brands and labels in Berlin - and the awesome team behind Fash Rev Germany.

Part of this dedicated bunch of changemakers is very familiar, friendly face: Carina Bischof, co-founder of upcycling label aluc and the Upcycling Fashion Berlin movement. Back in January, we both had a really inspiring chat about the status quo of fair fashion in Berlin and beyond. You can find the full interview in episode #6 of the GreenMe Berlin podcast (click here).

Another important initiative for the future of fashion is Sourcebook. From their office in a Kreuzberg backyard, the team is providing a strong B2B platform with 2000+ members! Through their trusted network, they are directly connecting local textile producers and manufacturers with a fast growing community of makers and creatives of the design sector. By providing expert education, workshops and resources, Sourcebook is passionately promoting sustainability and transparency within the fashion- and textile industry. You can register for free & check them out here.

A question we need to ask more often

Ethical Fashion Berlin - Fashion Revolution Week, Carina | GreenMe Berlin

Co-organizer Carina Bischof

WHY BUYING ETHICAL FASHION? LET's GET THINGS CLEAR...

Generally, I’m a big fan of minimalism. Consuming less and focussing on the things we really need is for sure the most eco-friendly choice - and incredibly freeing. Also a good idea: re-using the things that came out of the global production cycle (which is a hell of a lot!).

But there are times where we just need to buy something new. If that’s the case, we should stop being cheap skates and keep an eye on fair production, human rights and clean, organic & sustainable materials.

Sounds overwhelming?

I tell you: in Berlin, it isn’t! There is such a cool new wave of sustainable chic, plus heaps of modern street wear labels that make fair fashion fun and accessible for everyone. No need to wear hippie pants or earthy, “potato-sacky” clothes anymore.

THE BIGGEST BENEFITS OF BUYING FAIR FASHION

#1 You help saving the planet

Fast fashion factories leave a whole lot of shitty chemicals behind and use massive amounts of energy. So, if you pick organic fabrics, you reduce your carbon footprint and protect your own health, too. After all, it’s what we wear on our skin!

#2 You help the people who make your clothes

I guess you’ve heard about some of the ugly things that happen in the production plants, especially in developing countries. By buying fair trade clothes you make sure that the label cares about it’s people at least as much as about making a profit.

#3 It lasts much longer!

It’s a fact - clothes made from organic, renewable fibers are not only less toxic, but also much more durable! So if higher prices hold you back, do the maths 🙂

#4 You truly appreciate your clothes

Not only does it make you consume less (cause it costs a bit more and lasts longer) - knowing where your clothes come from, who made it, what’s the story behind it… I LOVE every single piece I bought eco and it makes me feel happy to wear them. Plus, they just look and feel SO much better than H&M!

#5 You support and give back to people

Green fashion is not all about the environment. It's about fellow humans, people who either live in less fortunate places than us, or work hard to make a living with their creative crafts. No matter if in India or Berlin, small scale artists and designers need our support to withstand against the fast fashion giants.

The Fashion Revolution Week reminded me that each and everyone of us has a choice. And every piece we consume makes a statement. Let's try to look a bit closer from now on and support those brands who get it right.

But how can we find out who is, without spending hours of research? How can we be sure which clothing brands really care and aren’t just fast fashion in green disguise?

Easy: there are SO many amazing designers, labels and ethical fashion stores in Berlin. Numbers growing. Wanna know which ones to check out first? Here comes my choice:

ETHICAL FASHION IN BERLIN: BEST STORES TO BUY MORE CONSCIOUSLY

1. LOVECO (Friedrichshain)

LOVECO is Berlin’s biggest concept-store for eco-fair fashion. The bright, brick-walled interior, an amazing swing hanging in the middle of the shop and a very friendly team just make you wanna stay. Whether it's clothes, jewelry or accessories - everything they sell is truly beautiful, trendy, hip and approachable. Forget the boring, old-fashioned eco-image, this is the happy future!

P.S. With LOVECO founder Christina, I recorded my very first podcast episode. Check it out here!

2. KALEE STORE (Friedrichshain)

What once started as an atelier for leather bags has now turned into a charming store & manufacture for eco-fair casual- and streetwear for both Him and Her, bags, accessories and small gifts. With a strong desire to live a more conscious, sustainable lifestyle, founder Clarissa asked herself how to reuse the leftovers of her former leather works. The result: their very own sustainable jewelry, handcrafted from recycled leather pieces that would have normally landed in the bin.

3. FOLKDAYS (Kreuzberg 36)

Just a stone’s throw from Kreuzbergs Markthalle Neun you’ll find the marvelous showroom of FOLKDAYS. They’re a young fair fashion label from Berlin, which I instantly fell in love with, as each product is handcrafted and tells us a unique story of far-away cultures. Living out their own passion for artisan products, every piece you find in the store is handmade using the finest materials and represents a specific craft, culture and tradition. With their beautiful products, they build a bridge to artisans in hard-to-reach countries and thus support small local producers to make a living through their craft.

4. STANDARD - SAUBERE SACHEN (Neukölln North)

One of my best-loved little stores in the Kiez. Katharina and Kathrin are giving all they can to make sustainable, “clean” fashion become a standard (hence why the name). The sell only products made from ecological, natural and fairly sourced materials. Brands and designers are changing regularly and the focus is on pieces that make us look great for more than just one season. Apart from fashion, they also sells a range of ingenious little items to green our lives, such as cosmetics, tea, paper items, liquors, glass ware and more. Again, every piece has its own story - and some make a great guilt-free gift, too. (It’s my no. 1 address for beautiful last-minute birthday shops).

5. WESEN (Neukölln North)

Not far away lies Weserstraße - a looong street that forms the beating heart of this area. It is home to SO many vintage stores, independent designers and innovative Berlin labels. Just like the team at WESEN, a dedicated local design collective, producing exclusive ethical fashion under their label format. With the workshop and atelier in the back, the front is open as a showroom where they sell their own creations, complemented by a selection of like-minded designers, making things like eco-fair boots, underwear and jewelry. All have the same goal: making top notch products that follow the highest ethical standards - and look dazzingly good. The showroom is an open place to meet and exchange, so swing by and say hi.

P.S. WESEN just moved into their brand new space at Tellstraße 7, 12045 Berlin (corner Weserstr.)

6. SÜßSTOFF (Neukölln South)

A bit further South in Schillerkiez (right near Tempelhofer Feld), this colorful little store sells clothes, accessories and artful gifts, which are fairly produced and 100% vegan. It is run by fair fashion designer Jenny - the face behind the beautiful organic label Börd Shört. Süßstoff is her atelier & store, where she also sells other amazing eco fair brands for women and men - some of them come right from the neighborhood, too. Next to clothes, the offer ranges from organic cosmetics, creative laptop cases and fine handmade jewelry to playful accessories, made by Jenny using leftover materials from her Bördshört lines.

7. BOHAZEL (Neukölln South)

Further up the same street, this homely store has turned into one of my new favorite places in Schillerkiez. You’ll find ethnic designs on handwoven rugs, colorful cushions & other epic crafts work. Inspired by the owners travels to Morocco, Vietnam & other places, it makes you dream of foreign cultures AND supports small scale craftsmanship. Come by with an open heart & get inspired.

Not to forget the charming makramé plant hangers that you can either buy, OR learn to make yourself in one of Bohazel's awesome workshops.

8. UN AUTRE VOODOO (Kreuzberg 61)

In its new location near Südstern, this friendly eco design store has found a bright large space to showcase local talents & introduce more people to the concept of slow shopping. That means: stop by, have a chat and hearing inspiring stories about the ideas and origins of the products you buy. Owned by a lovely French couple, you’ll find hand-made, sustainably and locally produced gems by international, but Berlin-based designers. Each artist gets a limited period to showcase, meaning you’ll always find something new.

9. OF/BERLIN (Kreuzberg 61)

Of/Berlin is a beautiful design store in West-Kreuzberg, selling carefully chosen fashion, food and design products to fall in love with. All are made by up-and-coming Berlin designers and small manufactures. If you’re look for a unique gift, a delightful accessory for your home or simply wanna try something new while supporting local craftsmanship and creative food producers - this is your go to place. 10. Wertvoll Berlin (Prenzlauer Berg)

A real institution in Berlin’s ethical fashion scene, Wertvoll has been the first eco-fashion store in the city! Opened in times when hardly anyone heard about fair fashion before, this pretty boutique has done an amazing job to put the spotlight on elegant, smart and high quality labels, vegan shoes and fairly produced accessories. With established brands ranging from Armed Angels to People Tree Jan’nJune, they’re proving that eco fashion is exciting, sophisticated and feels amazing to wear.

// ON THE ROAD... TO THE BERGWALDPROJEKT ON AMRUM

Only when you’re close to nature, you see why it is so worth protecting it.

One paradox of our time: We all love to be outside in the woods. Breathing in fresh air. Smelling the scent of lush trees. Feeling rested, nurtured, exhilarated. Yet, we spend most of our life time removed from nature, in closed buildings and busy cities.

Becoming aware of that is the first step. The second step: go out and do!

That's why I escaped Berlin last weekend to go into the forest - and plant some trees with an amazing NGO called Bergwaldprojekt e.V. I can already say: it’s been an incredible experience. Together with a bunch of motivated change makers and the re:Blog team (who initiated this trip), I hopped on a train, boarded a ferry and arrived on a swell little island in the North Sea: Amrum.

Boy, I hadn’t been at the North Sea for years and totally forgot how beautiful it is. Especially, as we were blessed with so much sunshine and blue sky.

Okay, enough beach-day-dreaming, let’s get to the essential tree-planting bit!

// PLANTING TREES… AND SO MUCH MORE!

Grateful for another sunny day ahead, me and 15 happy tree-planting apprentices met up in front of the brick stone cottage of the Bergwaldprojekt team. Each of us grabbed a bike (yay!) and off we went into the forest. Cycling on a sandy trail, soaking in the sounds and smells of nature, winding our way into the woods…

Arrived in the middle of an enormous forest (on an island!), our mission for the day unfolded: building up the forest on Amrum by planting as many maple and beech trees as possible. And action! We teamed up in pairs, grabbed the spades and a bag full of seedlings and started digging, shoveling and planting as much as we could.

My first attempts to use a spade were hilarious. I was such a greenhorn. But after Peter showed me a few tricks, I was unstoppable!

Bergwaldprojekt Amrum - Claudi Digging | GreenMe Berlin on the road

THE RESULT

In about 3 hours we all planted 200 trees! Isn’t that amazing? I guess I did around ten of them - together with my digging team partner Lena (who runs a really nice blog on vegan food and is even part of a vegan cooking school in Hamburg - how cool is that?).

By the way, there is an unreal selection of vegan food on Amrum. Who would have thought that? Especially our diner at the restaurant De Strunluuker  is something I’ll dream about for a while. And our vegan lunch in the forest kitchen was pretty amazing, too.

Bergwaldprojekt is not just about planting trees. It’s about much more: Human connection. Getting out of your comfort zone. And doing it together with people from all kinds of backgrounds.

Forester Peter told me that they have everything, from burned out managers, to punks, to 88-year old pensioners (who come every year!). It perfectly reflects their credo: Everyone can do something!

// WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE BERGWALDPROJEKT

I learned so much more than just to take a spade and dig a hole (which is already pretty useful). During our explorations in the woods, we stopped many times and listened to forester Peter’s exciting stories.

Did you ever think that there are 300,000 living species in one tree?

What was important to see as well: our tiny little trees were already two years old. And they were only about 50 cm high. I imagined how long it will take until my trees are fully grown. Bringing a forest back to life is an incredible job.

The feeling to have left something behind was amazing. I now can go back to this forest in a few years and marvel at beautiful strong trees that I planted.

Bergwaldprojekt Amrum - Feet on Leafs | GreenMe Berlin on the road

Since 1991, the Bergwaldprojekt has been active as an NGO, involving volunteers in ecological projects throughout Germany and parts of Europe. Together, they have achieved an impressive quota of two million new trees, engaging more than 50,000 people. For this great achievement, they got awarded as official UN decade project for "bio-diversity".

THEIR BIGGEST MISSIONS

  • To stabilize our ecosystems
  • To make participants aware of the real meaning - and the hazards - revolving around our natural living space
  • To educate (and include) people from all social backgrounds to treat our natural resources with respect and care

From my perspective: Check. Check. Check.

What’s most important: it is a POSITIVE project! And it has always been. Sure, the team wants us to make us aware of the true state of our nature (which is not very healthy). At the same time, they know that preaching is not the right way. It’s about getting active, digging, laughing, having a great time together. I’m so aligned with that - way to go!

To dig a little bit deeper (literally speaking), I asked Stephen Wehner what drives them most.

// 4 QUESTIONS TO BERGWALDPROJEKT CHIEF STEPHEN WEHNER

Bergwaldprojekt Amrum - Stephen | GreenMe Berlin on the road

Stephen is burning for the project. An environmentalist at heart, he has a pretty exciting background:

Studied business mathematics, worked as a financial consultant for years... Until he had enough and traveled through Africa in a camper van for an entire year. That of course left its marks.

Today, he is the proud director of the Bergwaldprojekt and committed himself to build a better future for all of us.

Stephen, what makes you feel most passionate about doing what you do?

For most people who join us, the work and living conditions in our camps are very unusual - and definitely a physical challenge. But end of the week, having accomplished all those strains from working in the woods, weather and simple lodging, most people leave us beaming with joy like children. That is the moment where my team and I get the deep feeling of doing the right thing.

What is something about your work that most people don't know, but should?

In the last 30 years, we have planted more than 2 million trees in German forests. That has a huge impact on biodiversity, drinking water, soil protection, protection of rockfall and avalanches in the high mountains, on climate and many other ecosystem functions.

However, planting trees alone cannot compensate the mass emissions, especially caused by flying. Once you planted a tree, it takes almost 60 years of growing until it will start a netto reduction of CO2 from our atmosphere. That’s why we really need to reduce emissions drastically within the next 15 years - or else, we will definitely harm ourselves.

If you could change something in the world in 24 hours, what would it be?

Waking up every person around our unique beautiful planet to make them understand that we are all connected with every single earthworm and that we will never find sustainable happiness until we take care for him.

You have one message to pass on to the GreenMe Berlin community - what do you want to tell them?

It’s never too late, start doing the right things NOW.

// HOW TO GET INVOLVED IN THE BERGWALDPROJEKT?

Reading about projects like Bergwaldprojekt is one thing, but actually going out there and doing… being part of… knowing that your actions really matter… that’s a whole other level.

BERGWALDPROJEKT WEEKS 2017

To join a Bergwaldprojekt program, all volunteers from 18 years are welcome. Joining the project is FREE. You just need to organize your travels and they take care of accommodation, food and all equipment.

If you want to join the Amrum project like I did, you can do that again from November 5-12. But worry not - the Bergwaldprojekt runs projects throughout Germany from spring to the end of autumn.

Here are some within easy reach from Berlin (much easier than Amrum):

Apart from that, there are heaps of other options during summer: You can join projects in the stunning mountains of Bavaria, the deep forests of Schwarzwald or the limestone nature parks around Saxony. Switzerland, Spain and Ukraine are on the list, too.

OTHER WAYS OF SUPPORT

// MILENA GLIMBOVSKI: PIONEERING THE PACKAGE-FREE MOVEMENT IN GERMANY

Looking at the world with different eyes, eager to find new solutions to unnecessary problems. That’s how Original Unverpackt - Germany’s first package-free supermarket - was born. Did you know that an average German person produces 611 kilos of trash per year? Luckily, Milena Glimbovski had a big vision to change that: Freeing our supermarket shelves from all that useless plastic wrapping, which we then unload into our bins at home. Since opening its doors 2 years ago, the OU store received a huge media response. Thousands of people found their ways into the small shop in Kreuzberg, and only the tomatoes sold in year 1 saved around 25kg of plastic trash. Today, Milena is passionately spearheading the low-/zero-waste movement in Germany, helping to free sustainability from its dusty hippie-image and making it affordable, fresh and sexy.

Original Unverpackt - founder Milena Glimbovski at work

A head full of ideas, an inquisitive mind and no fear of speaking up: Milena is a social entrepreneur, public speaker, minimalist and Berlin’s zero-waste heroine. Apart from founding OU, there’s so much more to this Berlin power girl: from opening more than 15 other shops all over the country, giving talks and workshops on the top stages (incl. TEDx), creating a daily productivity journal, launching her own youtube channel - to being quoted by Sir Richard Branson himself! Milena’s energy is contagious and she’s showing everyone that changing the world is possible. AND fun!

Home “Kiez”:

Neukölln

Favorite place in Berlin:

It’s such a cliché, but: Tempelhofer Feld. It seems like you’re in nature, but you’re still in the middle of the city.

Favorite product in your shop at the moment:

Hard one! jam - it’s handmade, really tasty, and we can give the packaging back to the producers.

Favorite green startup (in Berlin):

I like startups that have both a green and a social component - like Conflict Food. They are importing saffron from Afghanistan, pay fair prices to the people and give the women there a perspective.

// OKAY MILENA, NOW IT's TIME TO TALK

What are the most important things that you want people to see in Original Unverpackt?

That we're more than just a shop. There’s a whole movement behind it: we introduced the zero waste lifestyle to Germany and try to make it as big as possible. Going plastic-free takes more than just a few loose bananas in a shop. We're trying to tell the world a bigger story.

What makes you feel most excited about being part of the zero waste movement?

What I really like about it, is that it makes organic food and cosmetics affordable to everyone (usually that costs a lot!). And it doesn’t carry this hippie “öko-image” that’s been around a few years ago. It’s just becoming hip and cool to be green and lead a sustainable lifestyle. That is actually the best part of it...

What was the last thing you’ve thrown in the bin and why?

I have ADHD, so when I’m working or talking to someone, I always need something in my hands to fiddle around with. I often use play dough. Last Friday I left it in my bag... and it melted. No chance to fix it - I had to throw away both the play dough and the bag and was feeling really sorry about that.

Which person impacted on your life the most in the last 2 years?

So many! My business mentors are a huge inspiration to me. They are like my parents, but in an entrepreneurial way and I really look up to them. Also Casey Nestat. His videos just inspired me to pursue the things you love and share them with others. Great approach to life. He made me start my own youtube channel, too.

What would you say is your most important character trait as an ecopreneur?

My creativity. I have non-stop ideas. And often, I actually have too many of them - so it gets difficult to decide which project to focus on next. Most of the time, I’m really managing my own mind and try not to say yes to everything - but it’s hard. It’s my best and my worst trait at the same time.

What was the first thing you did when you woke up this morning?

After checking Instagram, Facebook, etc. I did 15-minutes of meditation. I try to do it every day before leaving my bed (cause once I got up, I probably wouldn’t do it anymore).

What was the last idea you had, where other people said “that’s crazy”?

I have little finger toys to keep me busy - and my whole team now plays with them. It’s fun, helps relax and concentrate. So my business partner joked that I should start an ADHD toy store - and I caught fire and started to research. He actually meant it as a joke… But I think there’s a lot of potential.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you:

I’m very small, about 1,50m. And when people meet me the first time, they’re very surprised. Another thing: as a teenager, I was a tom boy. A real skateboarder.

What book do you think everyone in the world should read?

"Eating Animals" by Jonathan Safran Foer. I wasn’t vegan before. But after I was 20% into the book, I already knew that I would stop eating meat. That really changed my life in a good way.

Please share 3 things, that make you most happy in your life at the moment:

First, I love my team and the setup in our office - really enjoy coming to work everyday. Second, my friends, who I don’t meet very often anymore. But when we meet we have such a good time. Third, I’m writing a book right now, which has been a lifelong dream and it excites me everyday.

If you could change one thing to make Berlin greener within 24 hours, what would it be?

I would shut down a few roads and open them just for bikes. I’m riding my bike everyday and the more space we have, the safer it is. And the air in the city gets greener and cleaner.

// BRUTALLY HONEST: BILLY WAGNER (NOBELHART & SCHMUTZIG)

Billy Wagner co-owns the Nobelhart & Schmutzig restaurant in Kreuzberg, which rocked its way into the Guide Michelin just a few months after opening. His vision is to introduce his guests into the huge range of products available in and around Berlin. For him, it as a personal duty to support local producers, saving those amazing products from being forgotten - or staying unknown. "Vocally local" you might say. An evening with him starts NOBEL (noble), then gets HART (hard) in the middle and SCHMUTZIG (dirty) towards the end! Oh yes...

We love Billy for being a little bit eccentric, 100% authentic, and heartfully enthusiastic about good produce. He's totally shaken up the Berlin wine scene, being a repeat winner of Sommelier of the Year - and clearly one of the more outspoken gastro-hosts in the country 🙂 Whatever the situation, if there's something tasty in that bottle, he's on board. Except tequila. He can't stand tequila...

At this year’s Stadt Land Food festival (see No.6 in our events guide), Billy is the curator of the wine program (surprise), making sure that you get to relish the finest wines of the region. He’s also climbing on stage for 2 seminars, and is one of the 24 restaurateurs dishing up a special Stadt Land Food Menu until Sunday (more info at the bottom).

Do you know that we’ve been looking forward to visit this event for ages?

The Green Market Berlin, the city's no.1 vegan lifestyle market, opened its doors for its autumn edition - and we couldn’t ask for a better consolation for the end of the summer! Claudi checked out the market, ate her way through lots of vegan food and talked to some of the founders running the stalls...

This article is written to inspire you and tells you about:

  • The Green Market Berlin - what to expect & who's behind it
  • 3 upcoming green projects we met & interviewed
  • Some other vegan lifestyle "heroes" (in pictures)
  • When you can visit the next one?

// The Green Market Berlin - what to expect & who is behind it?

Time to enter that stunning new location (which is also the new space of the Agora Collective). The Green Market is a colorful celebration of all things vegan and eco. Anything that’s fun and enjoyable for everyone. No preaching, no activism - but a place full of optimists, change makers and visionaries. A world of original vegan street food, music, shows, fashion, craft and creative freedom.

And what should I say? Diving into all these new flavors, being blown away by natural tastes, being proven (once again) that eco-fashion looks stylish and beautiful, seeing how old forgotten materials are given a new purpose, or learning how we can soon grow our own food at home - how exciting!

What started off in 2014 as Berlin’s first 100% vegan Christmas market has now grown into a cheerful celebration of vegan lifestyle in Berlin, that invites curious visitors 4x every year - kicking off spring, summer, autumn or winter with the best things each season has in store for us.

The hero behind The Green Market Berlin is Stefanie Witt, a young energetic Berliner who used her experience, drive and passion to build a platform for the Berlin green scene. She’s bringing together consumers and producers, so we can all learn and grow. The result is an open, friendly network that is focussed on more than just making profit.

Stefanie calls her exhibitors “heroes”, which makes our hearts sing and proves the great relationship within the scene. And you can feel that when visiting the Green Market. So inspiring!

Now, we're happy to present you 3 new heroes of the Berlin green scene:

// Change Maker #1: SUPERFRAN's

Green Market Berlin - Superfrans - healthy vegan rawfood

Moving our way past the first stalls, we saw all these happy faces passing by, pleasurably sticking their forks into a creamy piece of 'raw quiche' - Oh yes, I want this! Arrived at the source of goodness, there was so much more: delicious gateaus, coconut pralines & a super friendly couple. So I took a break to ask them some questions - and have a good excuse to try more of their incredible food 😉

What is Superfran's and what is the idea behind it?

We want to show the world how tasty and creative healthy, sustainable cooking can be. There’s a certain image of a healthy diet manifested in people’s minds - and we want to bring this to a new level. That’s why we’re only using high-quality organic, natural ingredients and no processed foods. We always prepare everything following the principles of raw food. Plus, all our dishes are vegan and sugar-, gluten- and soy free!

What makes you feel really passionate & excited about doing what you do?

We love the creative challenge behind coming up with a raw food option for certain dishes like Black Forest Tart or Russischer Zupfkuchen (Russian Chocolate Crumble). Also, “roasting” or “caramelising” in raw food style is such an awesome thing. However, the perfect motivation is really to see that our clients appreciate what - and especially how - we prepare our food, and leave our place happy and smiling. Apart from that, we love to experiment and let our creativity flow and simply play out some new recipes and ideas.

If you could change one thing in Berlin within the next 24hours - what would it be?

We would put warning signs on all the food products that are unhealthy and harmful to our bodies (so nearly everything) - with images, just how you find them on cigarette packs! Because: the most dangerous place is still the supermarket 😉

You've got one message to pass on to the GreenMe Berlin tribe - what do you want to tell them?

We’d be really happy if you come visit us at our cosy manufactury and treat your body to something good - and yes, that’s also working with a piece of cake!

And don’t be too dogmatic in terms of your diet - people are reading lots of articles and wave their fingers, as there’s always something you can pick on. Find out what’s best for YOU and be good to yourself - and don't forget: to eat is to love!

Our favorite thing at Fran's & Alex' stall:

RawFaello !! A healthy, happy, vegan version of that famous coconut ball

// Change Maker #2: ABSURDISTANA

The Green Market Berlin - Absurdistana - Upcycling & Handicrafts

The proof that Berlin is a place where creative people can follow their heart and try something unusual: Berlin-born upcyclerista Katharina thinks outside the box and is bursting with passion when talking about her craft - it's an idea we never thought about before, but instantly fell in love with:

What is Absurdistana? What is the idea behind it?

For one thing, I rescue and recycle vintage silver-plated cutlery and hand stamp them with sweet little symbols, words and personalized messages. Apart from that, I create jewellery using material like wood, lava beads and many moon symbols - the jewellery is partly hand-stamped too.

What makes you feel really passionate & excited about doing what you do?

Moreover, I'm really into old silvered cutlery. It's not very contemporary to use that type of cutlery and most of the time it dusts in the basement or people try to sell that "scrap silver" back to the industry for too little money. So I try to save, re- and upcycle it with passion and bring it back to life.

If you could change one thing in Berlin within the next 24hours - what would it be?

Berlin is great! I was born here and it's my home. But like everything, Berlin is not perfect. One of the things I really would like to change is the dirt. There are many parts of Berlin which look really dirty. I know, compared to other cities we have a green one - but really not a clean one at all. We should move on to a conscious use of rubbish - especially plastic! Like all over the world...

You've got one message to pass on to the GreenMe Berlin tribe - what do you want to tell them?

If you want to change the world start with little steps by yourself. We all have scratches and quirks like an old silver spoon but we are beautiful anyway, and we can make the world a better place by inspiring and helping each other.

Our favorite thing at Katharina's stall:

The hand-stamped forks with "Mr. Right & Mrs. Always Right" 🙂

// Change Maker #3: FRESH SQUARE

Green Market Berlin - FreshSquare

Two passionate girls from France came to Berlin to revolutionize the way we grow our own food - at home. With Fresh Square, they just launched their green garden on kickstarter and won us with their bubbliness and positive energy - we had to ask them what they’re all about:

What is Fresh Square? What is the idea behind it?

Fresh Square is an indoor garden to grow small veggies, fruits or roots as well as fresh herbs at home even if you don’t have any time or any gardening skills. We wanted to bring to everyone the pleasure to experiment growing food at home. We think that food should be produced in a way that is fair for both the planet and the people. And we realized that the best way to be sure that our food is grown in a responsible way is to do it ourselves.

We wanted to grow our veggies and herbs in our apartment, in the easiest possible way because we are always busy and can’t take care of plants much. So we thought, why not build it? We launched hundreds of experiment to optimize a soil recipe that would be very easy to use and made only out of natural ingredients. This is what makes Fresh Square special 🙂

What makes you feel really passionate & excited about doing what you do?

We are thrilled at the thought that we are really making something new, something that could have a positive impact on people life: reconnecting them to nature, to their food, to diversity and quality in taste. Gradually, we want to help the Freshers (Fresh Square users) to become self-sufficient, if they want. They will, with very little time and a little help of technology, be able to create their own soil, and know when and how they should enrich it to get fresh and new taste. Our values are Empowerment, Adventure and Pro Planet. We want to make a difference, helping people experiencing something new themselves, with a positive planet impact and a great user experience!

If you could change one thing to make Berlin greener within the next 24hours - what would it be?

Berlin is a really nice city to live in, full of parks, with nice bike lanes and efficient waste sorting. If I was to change something to make it greener, I would create wider bike lanes in every street. Sometimes when there are no bike lanes, the cars pass very close and very fast by.

You've got one message to pass on to the GreenMe Berlin tribe - what do you want to tell them?

Fresh Square is the beginning of a new revolution, a revolution where it’s easy to grow food at home. What we really need now is to have people know about us. It would help tremendously if the GreenMe Berlin readers could back us on our Kickstarter campaign and/or share the link of the page to all their friends who could be interested in getting a Fresh Square.

Our favorite thing at Fresh Square's stall:

Meeting co-founder Lou & feeling her passion for the project

// THE OTHER HEROES OF THE GREEN MARKET

Green Market Berlin - Black Sheep

The power ladies of the Black Sheep Café served up their masterpieces of handmade cakes, steaming cinnamon buns, raw-vegan wraps, funky vegan hotdogs, waffles and home-brewed Kombucha. So much passion can only end up in flavor explosions! Can't wait to visit their café in Treptow soon...

Green Market Berlin - The Juicery

One of the top addresses in town to fuel up on your daily dose of superfood and natural fruit power: The Juicery rolled out their best-of's: green smoothies, acaì bowls, epic nut shakes - how can you decide?! Swing by at their shop in Prenzlauer Berg, just opposite Mauerpark.

Green Market Berlin - Fraeulein Frucht

These two Berliners know how to shake the fruit trees: Fräulein Frucht produces flavor-packed jams and sirups from wild-growing fruits and nuts around the city. Meet them each Saturday at the market at Maybachufer and learn where they go to pick their ingredients - you'll be surprised how much is growing right in front of our nose!

Green Market Berlin - Fraeulein Frucht - I Am Delicious, vegan cakes

Oooh, my heart beats faster when I remember the mouth-watering cakes at I AM Delicous - founder xx is a trained vegan patissière and created the most beautiful tartelettes - think of white chocolate & fig, plum & vanilla, cashew & raspberry or indulgent chocolate... She'll open her shop on Veteranenstraße in Mitte on 15th October - MUST GO!

Green Market Berlin - ManuTeeFaktur + LoveBiteGirl

Manu came to seduce the people with his organic chai's and homemade Kombucha from his ManuTeeFaktur - and I finally met his partner, the LoveBite Girl from Sydney, and tried her delicious gluten-free banana bread.

// HIP & HEALTHY – A SUPERFOOD PARADISE //

I LOVE!

>>  Quinoa Salad with Almond & Lime Topping + Acaì Fresh Bowl = Best Food Ever!

>>  Chilling outside on the wooden stairs in summer & people-watch

I'm crazy about this place! With cold pressed juices, green smoothies and super foods being on the rise, it’s a surprise that there is no comparable place in Berlin so far. Good for Daluma! Not only is the food extremely healthy, it’s also a treat for the eyes - and incredibly tasty!

The lunch menu boasts creative vegan, organic and/or raw food compositions that you can mix and match as you like. Choose your base of lentils, quinoa, rice, raw veggies or pasta and then add your preferred topping. Loaded with plant-based energy and immune boosters, this is one of the top hangouts for the hip and health-conscious Mitte crowd.

Or swing by in the morning to fuel up with a power breakfast: Chia pudding, acaí bowls and smoothie creations like Green Giant or Dr. Feel Good - it’s all there. In summer, the open shop front with the wooden-staired seats and comfy cushions add to that special Berlin „outside culture“. Lean back, enjoy yummy food and watch the street life around trendy Rosenthaler Platz pass by.
